new shimano pedals

my girlfriend just got a new pair of shimano m505's. they came with the plastic platform still attached to them....how do you get them off? do you just unclip them or what? i don't want to mess her new pedals up! thanks

I use a small allen key in the back of the cleat, to pry the platform up and out of the cleat.
PS. You want to borrow this allen key from someone in case it bends

Set tension to minimum (allen bolt counterclockwise) then twist out like you would if it was your shoe. Failing that wedge a flathead screwdriver in the rear jaw to force it open then twist it out.

Or, you could do what Salsa did when comfronted with that problem many years ago. Whack it with a mallet until it falls off or breaks.
