Hey,

Alright, after doing a ton of research, I think based on my riding style, one of these three clips are what Im looking for. But I dont know which one to buy! What would yall say about em?

What kind of shoes are you going to be using, and what kind of riding? The 520 is to be used w/ a stiff soled mtn shoe, where as pedals like the 324, 545, and 647, are designed to be used with a less stiff shoe, with a gummy sole, so you can unclip, and still have some grip to ride down sketchy secitons and what have you. That is not to say they can't be used vise versa, it's just pointless to have that cage around the pedal if you are using a stiff soled shoe.

Im not really sure at the moment, I looked at the Nike Kato III Straps at the LBS and they looked alright...any recommendations?

Whatever fits. My point is, the pedals with no cage/platform around them, is meant to be used with shoes like:

where they have very little grip on the sole, but are super stiff.

Pedals w/ the platform around them, are designed to be used with shoes that have a gummy sole, but not as stiff, so you can unclip and still have some traction:

Get the 520. Good entry level SPD that will work well and last long.

I actually just went up to the LBS and I think Ive changed my mind to either the TIME's or the eggbeaters...ha! Now which one!!!!! AHHHH!!!!!

Mallet M's

1) The color didn't match my helmet

2) The engagement and release was not nearly as quick or definitive as SPD's, even with a significant amount of material shaved off the soles of my Special Ed Pro shoes.

3) Most importantIy, I found them less effective as contact/control points. With all that mushiness (or "float," I guess they call it), they were not nearly as responsive to lateral inputs.

1) You are such a showqueen. BTW, I cleaned my bike after our last discussion of "look smart / ride smart". Also thanks for the house paint colour tips. You definitely have great decorating skills and you shouldn't be ashamed of them.

2) I found I had that problem until the cleats wore down a little. However with 2 seasons of usage I think yours should have worn down enough. My experience is with the Eggbeaters and Candies. Maybe the larger Mallet platform just gets in the way too much.

3) I can understand what you mean here. I ride on top of the bike and rarely lean. I know I should but I'm still developing.

If your Mallets need a new home, I need a beater set of Crank Bros pedals for my hardtail. PM me if you want to get rid of them.

I neglected to mention I was on my third set of cleats. It seems that the soft brass of the CB's wears down quite rapidly when subjected to multiple rocky hike-a-bikes. I would imagine they hold up just fine for spin classes, coffee shop jaunts, etc - you know, your type of riding.

OMG - You just described a typical week! Have you been having me followed?

FWIW, I do hike-a-bike a little but haven't had any excessive wear on the bottom. The Specialized shoes seem to protect them well . I did have to do some major surgery on the rubber cleats to clear the engagement mechanism, though.
