shoes?
 

hey guys i was just wondering if you guys could recomend me some shoes. right now im riding vans skate shoes and i love them cuz they hook up with the pedals realy well. and i love the way they look oppozed to nylon/synthetic uppers. but the problem is the trails i ride have many steep climbs and ravines that often when i run out of speed require me to dismount and climb up on foot. so i was just wondering if you guys could recomend me a pair of shoes that still looks cool like skate shoes. hooks up well with pedals (i ride flats) and has some kind of tread on the bottom made for hiking or something because skate shoes dont hook up at all on the loam.

Have you considered SPD's? Once you learn, you'll never go back.

I have a pair of the 661 nuevos I picked up last season. I think they are called the tiburons this year. So they are not really all that cool looking, but they work really well in a hike-a-bike type situation. I know you said you are riding platforms, but these have worked well for me since making the switch to clipless.

yes i have considerd spd pedals. but i also use my bike for causual transportation to my freinds house and thigs like that. also i like to dirt jump so i think i can solve the problem with a pair of spd pedals that also havea platform section like http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/142...10--Pedals.htm but the only thing im afraid of is that like i said i do some dirt jumping and such and i ride alot of rough trails and im afraid of not being able to unclip fast enough. i dont know. you guys tell me what you think but yes ive thought of going spd for a long time.

ugh god those 545's are awsome but very expensive. geez i want to not spend more on a pair of pedals than my rear mech. lol those are realy awsome but can you guys recomend me a decent pair for a cheaper price because i just cant stomach the cost. not unless those things last a lifetime or have one hell of a warantee on em. lol. but anyways just give me some feedback and tell me what you guys think. and remember, im a high school student going into college so im realy tight on cash (wich is funny cuz i wana buy a full suspention bike for riding trails) and those things are beastly expensive also. anyways anything you guys can give me is much appreaceated.

There is just no substitute for a good pair of clipless shoes!... I vote for Diadora, the best shoe ever. Just cant beat the quality to price. best ever comfortability. Greatest shoe on earth.

Bike shoes are a fit thing for me. Shimanoes are the wrong shape and too narrow as are a lot of the other common brands. The only ones I find comfortable are the Specialized. I just got my third pair. I went to the $130 level (list) with the side ratcheting buckle. Very well made, rugged, very comfortable with an aggressive sole for walking/scrambling. They come in half metric sizes (like 45.5).

Eack pair I've bought over the years were of a different size, so mail-order is out of the question. I have to try before buy which complicates things as few places carry much of an inventory of any brand.

I'm a cleat wimp and also ride rough trails. The answer is the #56 multi-release cleats. Even with the pedals tightened down, you can get out of these with out thinking andmuch practice. Unlike their predicessors, the #55's, you can bunny-hop with out their releasing as long as you don't point your toes down.

I use the M540 pedals, the predecessors to the M545 I guess. Possibly not as the 540's don't have a cage and are super light. After a year the spindels got loose. They take 24 bearings each. Not too bad to rebuild with a set of tweezers, but an overhaul shouldn't be needed that soon.

I used to use a "caged" pedal, but found very little diiference, even when not clipped-in on the climbing restarts, with the non-caged.

I like my 661 sessions, they are SPD's but with a good sole(soul?). I have hiked in them as well, and they are comfortable and pretty cool looking. + I got them for $16

If your shoes suck, your day sucks. Get a decent pair of pedals and shoes to go with it. We all were scared when we started clicking in. It's a weird feeling, but think about it. You got the balls to jump 25lbs of aluminum, why not grow the marbles to click in? Your natural instincts will pop you out when you fall, and before you know it you'll want to up the tension because you pop out during your drops and kickers.

Get the M545, or look into the Crank Brothers platforms. They'll last you many seasons, so it's worth the investment. Plus they look extra gravy compared regular platforms.

BTW, Adidas and Cannondale have nice shoes that you may like.

hey guys i did some looking around at pricepoint. and i cant believe that i missed these pedals! http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/149...edals-2005.htm wut do you think of those i think they will be a little higher quality than those of the time pedals. also on buying shoes. since it is a very specific article of clothing. should i see if my lbs carrys them? because not being compfy with clips is bad not being compfy in your footwear is worse! and also about those shoes. i am very lucky to be blessed with wide feet! yey wich makes it very difficult to find shoes. becuase apparently anything besides high quality boots, dont seem to offer a wide model. so if you guys know of any bike shoes that happen to be a little more on the wide side that would be great. and also like i said i would like it if they still managed to look pretty cool. i dont mind if they have synthetic uppers. its just i never realy liked the look of those big honkin mtb clipless shoes. that have giant cleets on em and look like they would be more at home at a baseball diamond than on the trail, but hey maby thats why they have those big ole cleets is to do just what im trying to get em to do, climb! but anyways

Those crank brothers will be a nice pedal for you. Easy in, easy out. As for shoes, definitely go to the LBS, especially since you have wide feet. Comfy shoes = happy riding.

661s are a good idea, those and Lake have non-bikish lookin' sneak/hushpuppy lookin' shoes too
