Well boys and girls...

The Purple is on the way. I've been getting numerous boxes in the mail, with all kinds of goodies. I got a really good deal from a guy on Ebay who sells alot of the retro purple ano bits. The prices are all higher, but I emailed him and asked if he would match prices of other sellers and give any discounts if I bought a whole bunch of stuff. He said, "Tell me everything you want, and make me an offer." So, I found all the stuff I wanted, and told him what I was willing to pay. I offered a fair price, but still at a hefty discount. He shipped everything out that day. It's all old retro stuff anyway, so he obviously still made a profit.

The first here, is one that took a bit of work. It's the stock crank that came with my Rockhopper. The aluminum cranks were pretty badly nicked and scratched. So, I sanded it as smooth as I could with 400gr., then bead blasted the cranks in my garage with a touch-up glass bead gun at 90psi. It turned out pretty nice. Almost like new, but with a nice satin alloy finish.

I also got two new rings off ebay, along with some purple alloy chainring bolts, and new M8 crank bolts with purple alloy dust covers. My total invested to restore the crank is as follows...

XT 44t outer ring- $17.
Race Face 32t middle ring- $18.
Stock steel 20t inner ring- $0
Purple bolts- $11 for all.

The next is a little more purple. It's a new M580 LX rear der. I couldn't help myself. I like the new jockey pulleys alot better, because they have real sealed bearings, not the cheap bushings with dust covers.

P.S. Even more purple stuff on the way.

I got all my stuff on Ebay. Just do a search in the MTB parts section for "purple", and all kinds of purple stuff shows up.

Ok Mountain Dudes and Dudettes,

Here's the wheels. I finally got them cleaned up, and trued back into shape. I installed some new tires, and gave them some new purple anodized bolt-on skewers.

Cassette- SRAM PG-980
Skewers- Purple anodized bolt-on
Rear Tire- Kenda Klaw XT with extra inner liner.
Front Tire- Panaracer Dart Classic.
Hubs- Specialized
Rims- Ritchey Rock Comp.

And yet, still more purple parts on the way.

Now that you've got 'em all trued up and shod, I hate to tell you this: you need to take it apart, strip the center surfaces of the rims, polish 'em and the shoot 'em candy purple

No, I didn't really need to sand it. It was already prepped after chemically stripping it. All I did was remove the original paint with a stripper, and sprayed it clean with a garden hose. The alloy underneath was plenty rough to reprime. I did a little sanding to remove a couple spots of leftover paint, but nothing major. After priming, I then used my airbrush to paint the bike, and used two part clear coat to finish it off.

I still have to apply new decals and add more coats of clear to seal everything up. That will come soon, when I can get my air compressor fixed.

Darn thing overheated on me.

This is looking like a real fun project. Hate to say it, I like building them more than riding them.

Damn Patriot. That sure is unique! This certainly harkens back to the days of yore. Anyway, as soon as I saw the request for purple wheels I thought of these:

Unfortunately, they seem to be disk specific.

They seem to make them by misting red and blue on the wheels. Up close, you can actually see the dots. About 2-3 feet back they give the purple look. Of course, since you're so handy with a paint gun anyway, couldn't you do this?

^^^ Ah. Got it.

No need to bump it. I still have pics and such to update the thread with. It's just a matter of time. I keep it on my subscribed list, so it's easy for me to find.
