Goin' Retro!!!

My rebuild is now officially in progress, and I will post pics along the way. Initially I had thought of going with a theme that is more modern and very conservative in style. But then, I decided on goin' retro. It is to be painted flourescent green and pink, with new decals throughout.

Here's a pic of the original bike when my friend gave it to me in its less than rideable condition. It's an old Specialized Rockhopper Comp with a set of Manitou Spyder forks.

I think it's a 2001 model.

Here's a link to repair work I did and posted in the Framebuilders forum, for those interested.

https://www.bikeforums.net/framebuilders/300420-repairing-aluminum-frame.html

Now that the repair is complete, the paint job and rebuild can begin. I figured, I might as well give it the really obnoxious paint job I was thinking about doing. I want it to really stand out. Here's my current progress with the first couple of light coats. The green and pink will be fuller, slightly darker, and much brighter when finished. The paint is nothing short of blinding. Really sharp.

If you think this is interesting, you should see the modern LX gruppo, along with retro hardware that's going on this thing. It's gonna be a real oddball.

do you think you could PM me with a website or some instructions or something on how to completely redo a frame?

i've got an old frame that i've been running single speed on and want to strip it down and do a similar project as yours... paint!

its just have no clue to start, clueless from type of paint, to how to tape up the frame.

thx.

+1 on obnoxious

It reminds me of vintage Fisher stuff for some odd reason. It's still fun and if you have a palet for it...more power to ya.

I'd love to do a retro job...hmm...Pauls...Kooka...CookBros...biopace...spin mags...or even worse, those wind discs...specialized UmmaGumma tires...Kore stem...King headset, wait a minute...King has been producing excellence for as long as I can remember.

I wouldn't mind doing a Girvin/Noleen fork though instead of an old school slider...replace the shock with an RP23

Well, it's not going to be totally retro. Mainly the shifters and ders will all be modern, but the bar/stem, seatpost, various nuts and bolts, etc, will be retro back to the mid 90's. If you consider that retro. It is certainly not the most common today.

Well, just a little update on current progress. The main colors are done, with a little bit of touch up on the way. Try as I may, green and pink do not transition very well at all. You end up with a band of brown, for those of you who have done any painting. So, I'm thinking I will do some hot purple over the transition points to help the frame blend in witrh the purple hardware I'm installing.

I also adhered a new set of flourescent green Manitou decals on the forks.

The question is. Should I fade/airbrush in a band of purple to transition the pink and green, or should I tape it with sharp lines?

I'd do an airbrush fade - -longer (3"?) on the top/bottom surfaces of the tubes (like a highlight) and narrower (1"?) on the sides. But I think I'd do yellow instead of purple. Purple is still going to give you a brownish tint at the overlap of the green. Yellow will give you a cleaner blend.

another way you could have done a cleaner transition without the blending of colors is to find any kind of material with small holes and use to mask it off, to get a sort of screen print effect, the colors will be more discrete yet still get the fade effect w/o as much of the browning. Alot of stuff in the 90s did this for that very reason,

need some hammer pants to go with that bike.

Did you rough-up the old paint before spraying over?

Yes, I roughed it with 600gr. I messed with a real thin strip of fade to see what it would look like, and it was also brown. I didn't like it. Then I thought, "You know, I could try something differant. How about a compromise between a fade and some taping?"

Now, what do ya think?

I know, I know, it's VERY differant.

All I need now, is the new decals for the tubing.

That's a nice effect. Now how 'bout masking the other way and fogging in an ultramarine blue on the green side?

Y'know, in looking at this again, it occurs to me that you could do the upper half of the tubes flour. pink and the undersides green - -then it would look sorta "half-ripe."

I'll admit it. The rockhopper is ass ugly to begin with- I know, as I have one:

However, dude, not trying to be offensive, but holy crap, that thing is now beyond hideous.
Looks like custom Key West style colors to me.

But, to each their own, at least you are in to modding your bike.
