cassettes
I just replaced my chain with a sram pc-951. I currently have a sram pg-950 9 speed cassette that is starting to wear. Once I replaced the chain the shifting has gone down hill bad. the chain shifts up into larger cogs fine, but is very hesitant to go down to smaller cogs. I did have to make this chain 2 links shorter than the old one because in the large cog/small chainring combo there was no chain tension.
The shifting was perfect before the chain switch (other than a skipping in the small/middle chainring combo, which is now gone with the new chain while pedaling on the stand). I lubed the cables. I am assuming it has to be the cog, even though i've put less than 1000 miles on it. The teeth on the small cog are getting shark toothed a bit.
What kind of cog do you guys recommend on the cheap side? $50 or so max.

Throw the stick!!!!
If it was 1,000 hard miles it is possible that you ran your chain too long thus wearing out the cassette. I doubt that is was caused it, but it is possible. When you put the pg-950 cassette on did you put a new chain on at the same time? If the chain was already used it could have been stretched some causing the damage to the cassette.
Regardless, you should get more than 1,000 miles out of any new cassette when used with a new chain and the chain replaced as needed.

I ran it pretty hard, but nothing extreme. This was the cassette the bike came with, along with the original chain the sram pc-49
