Lost the will to ride...

I was riding with my wife and a friend last night, and it's all going well until I simply lost the desire to continue on. Right around the 2 km mark from the trailhead [Camp Chief Hector from Barrier Dam], I just thought to myself, "I want to go home". I did the climb soooo slowly, but it wasn't because I was bonking or had dead legs, I just didn't have the will to push any harder. I completely railed the DH [thanks to my new Titus MotoLite2], but then kind of gave up again when I got to the flats. I even walked for a while, and had to fight the urge to leave the bike behind on the trail. I just didn't feel like riding.

I'm feeling kind of messed up now, because I love to ride. I'm really hoping it was just an off day.

I'll try getting out again tonight, and force myself to have a good time. I e-mailed a buddy about it, and he said he got the exact feeling about snowboarding this past season, and only ended up doing 4 days or something crazy like that. There's a big group of us heading to Fernie in a month to do some riding, so that should be good.

I've had days like that where all conditions were perfect, and I just didn't feel like riding.

You'll get over it.

I'm pretty sure everyone has days like those. Last season I went through a couple weeks were every ride I went on ended with me not wanting to ride anymore but eventually I got back into the flow of things.

You know, the vast majority of us don't HAVE to ride. If you don't feel like it, don't make yourself. Take some time off and enjoy staying active with other hobbies. Soon you will be feeling the itch to get back out and enjoy the trails again.

Nothing ruins a good hobby faster then turning it into work.

Actually, I do have to ride. If I get fat, my wife won't love me no more.

I can think of about 250 fun forms of excercise off hand other then bicycling. Put your mind to it and you'll figure out something.

That will be very costly

Seriously, I have thought once in a while "what the heck am I doing out here", then I remember why I started and it was to have fun staying in shape. I can't think of a better cardio workout that I would rather do and it combines the fun of bikes and being outdoors.....doesn't get much better than that Ride on!

Feel free to take a break from a particular sport. The change of activity should remind you what you love or hate about the sport. Whats the opposite of mountain biking? maybe try scuba diving or stamp collecting. If you stop using your bike for 2 years, sell your bike or giving it to someone who doesnt have one.

I think I'll be okay. I went for a short rip through Sideshow Bob with a good buddy of mine, then we went for slurpees and made fun of this girl who had no ass. I even crashed once. Good times. I think I'll be okay after tomorrow's SSS in Fish Creek park. Thanks for the support everyone!

To all those who can't get motivated, having a really goofy crash in the first 5 minutes of a ride is good therapy - it makes you take riding far less seriously. Also, riding with a really good friend who's slower than you will do wonders. Thanks Ryan!

You could just be over working your body. Have you been riding alot lately? If so it could just be overtraining. Sometimes your body just needs a break. Try taking a couple days off to rest. A big indicator of overtraining is lack of motivation.

Well its official, something is killing my drive. I just went and rode one of my easy trails. A nice jaunt with equal up and down, nothing to difficult. The up kicked my ass (I know why that is, 10 months of no riding isn't good for the gut) and on the down, where I usually love to be, I couldn't let off the brakes. Seriously, if this keeps up I might just have to take up golf.

Ya ya, its whining but this year isn't turning out to be very good for the ole biking. Seriously rutted

Well I am not the most seasoned rider on here, but I have experienced what you are going through in another sport. Its why I got into biking... to get away from a sport that I knew I loved but was in a rut and didn't feel like doing. Try something completely new, something that you have to get all the equipment for and focus on that for a while. Being away will rekindle the flame, and you will pick up another cool hobby to boot.

I went from a pole vaulter to a pole vaulter who downhills in the offseason. Good deal.

I had a ride like that earlier this season. The ride sucked. I sucked. I hated how i felt. The next week I rode solo and felt tons better.

I went out for another ride tonight with a good buddy. We have matching singlespeeds, which is pure coincidence, but keeps us on an even footing. We had fun. We hit tonnes of twisting singletrack and dodged many a climb. Afterwards we went for slurpees. My wife and I are going out to ride Lake Minnewanka tomorrow morning. I should whup her butt, as I'm feeling much better and have a front derailleur now. Then it's off to the Ship for many pints!
