Directional tread -- which way?

Directional tread -- which way?
I recently purchased some 26" MTB tires that have a "chevron" pattern in the tread. I have mounted them with the chevron pointed in the direction of rotation. Is this correct or does it matter?

Others will go the other way on the front to get better braking.
I just followed the arrows on the sidewalls.

Yeah, different schools of thought here.
1, you point the chevrons in the direction of rotation cause it channels water and stuff out of the way. Probably the intended purpose.
2, chevrons facing backwards, this lets them "dig in" to water, mud, rocks etc.
Same debate with the Remote control rock crawler trucks.
