I spent a nice relaxing weekend in the NC mountains (Boone area) with a couple other photographer friends. It was pretty much foggy and raining off and on all weekend, so not too many opportunities for large landscape photos… I really hoped to come home with a few images of the nice scenic views from the western part of the state. Oh well.

I did enjoy my time spent at Sugar Mountain in Banner Elk, NC. They held a NORBA NSMB event, which a few other BF members have posted about. The DS racing was pretty awesome. I chased photos of the Semi-Pro/Pro DS on Saturday afternoon. Definitely some exiting racing on a pretty cool course. Sunday I checked out the Pro DH and a little short track racing. A fellow photo-dork acted as a lighting assistant throughout most of my time on the mountain, which worked out pretty well. Thanks peeps!! I prettymuch freaked out when I got home and viewed these on the monitor. I was pretty sure things were going well in the field, but wow… I was waaaaaaaay stoked on these.

/\/\ The intentional "blur" of the front tire really lets the viewer feel the speed/action! That is a great shot you captured.

Thanks blue Jays. I'm glad you picked up on that. Showing details relating to motion is one property i try and convey in most of my action images.

The event it self was a good bit smaller than last year, as far as the racer/spectator turn out. I can only presume that Crankworx was the reason for the no show of some of the big names like Hill, Graves, Havukainen, that were here last year. I was bummed to a small degree. Mainly due to the event just felt like it went by too quickly. There is also a race at Snowshoe this weekend, which i think a bunch of the weekend warrior types/locals are opting for instead of this past race at Sugar.

Another angle of the lower parking lot road gap - We talked a girl into putting her v-dub in harms way for the sake of the photo... It was pretty cool.

Nice, Id never do that with my car...
Just something I wanted to point out.. large grassy area on the bottom half of the picture is really distracting from the main focus... I know its showing how large the drop is.. but still very distracting. (Or maybe I just need to just sit back farther from my screen)

Still great photos, better action photos than I could hope to take.

That’s cool.
The main focus or idea behind the image was to show the scale more than detail the x-up over the car. For me, the grass catches my eye first then the slope of the landing leads my eye up the image towards the sky. To me it helps give the image depth and accomplishes showing the scale of the “over all idea”, the gap, trick and a little insight into the environment...

Thanks Pete! I was hoping for the blue sky scenario, but once I got into the woods and saw how the light played through the fog and how lush the wet surroundings appeared… I felt like I had a recipe for really dramatic photos, but (wow) I ended up a little surprised by the results.

Thanks! I'm dabbling in weddings and portraits also... they make money, but they don't feel nearly as rewarding as some of my moments in action related photos.
