Practice practice practice... I suck at doing hops w/ platforms, i haven't used em for years and years, and I feel really bad so i've been practicing more on platforms. Platforms are just flat pedals. Find someone else that knows how to do em and learn from them if possible. If not, start small and get bigger!

Make sure you set up an obstacle to clear! Lie a 2x4 on the ground. Once you clear it, set it up on it's side. I don't know why, but having a actual object to hop over makes it easier.

I told you to practice a ton. Are you using clipless? If you are you are never going to learn the right technique. Flat pedals dont allow your shoes to connect to the pedal.

I personally like cage pedals. I think they offer a little more grip then regular platforms. With the more grip you can pull your back end up easier/higher.

The hardest part for me was trying to learn how to get my back tire off of the ground. Once you learn this, practice, practice, practice, ... to learn better form and get more hieght.

A couple of good ways to figure out how to lift the rear tire is to 1) stand over your bike, lift your front wheel up and with a quick momentum shift forward in your upper body and arms lift the rear wheel off of the ground and 2) practice lifting your rear wheel off of the ground by pushing back and pulling up on the pedals. Also, both of these methods will help you get higher once you figure out how to bunny hop.

hehe do it on a nice light roadbike I find myself doing it when it would be harder on the bike to hit that pothole or whatever. Don't mean to, but I've gotten air a few times! Just thought it was funny A new guy on a ride last week saw me do it and said, "Whoa! You've been riding a long time haven't you?!" I said no, I'm just stupid like that

I agree with DrGonzo, if you know someone that can teach you have them show you, but if you dont...

ok, this is how I do it on flats, I am not saying that this is the correct way, but I can bunny hop in birks so that says something...

I compress my front shock alittle (just so I do not have to "lift" the front of the bike as much) and pull up the front of the bike (much like a wheelie)
Then (this is the part that is difficult) with my pedals at 3 and 9 o'clock (I am right side dominate, and my right pedal is in front, but it does not matter) I point my toes down while pushing backwards (towards my rear tire axle) and pull up with my pedals (ok, I realize that sounds really weird, but the second step is done as one motion at the moment your front tire is about to peak in hieght above the ground, and you will probally slip off the pedal a few times and maybe get cut on your calf, but that is how I do it, and i do it that way on flats and clipped in, but I would do it with very little speed b/c speed just make things more difficult when learning)

I hope this help and if you need any clearification PM me and ask, and do not worry if it sounds stupid, b/c I probally did the samething

good luck and pratice

I found this in the BMX section posted by flatlandfreak

hope this isnt the equivelant of forum piracy lol

O.k. well bunnyhopping is probably one of the most frequently asked how to's, and i usually dont respond to them because it's an easy concept, but kinda hard to explain exactly how to learn them and it always different for every person. but ill try and explain it as best I can.....

begin by riding at a medium pace, bend down a little so you are kind of hunched over the bars a little and your arms are bent. Now bring your body up fast, but dont pull up on the bike, just let your arms straighten out. As soon as your arms are straight, now pull them and the bars up close to your chest, with the momentum of your body and you pulling your arms up, you should be able to get the front of the bike up pretty high. And once you learn to get the rear up and combine everything youll be able to get it up even higher.

Now the back of the bike.... As soon as you get the bars up near your chest and the front of the bike is close to as high as its gonna go, push your arms back out, but instead of putting them straight back down, push them out in front of you, at the same time, pull you legs up, doing all this at the right time will (hopefully) get the rear end of the bike up. REMEMBER!! All of this must be done in a relatively short period of time.

Ok this isnt technically a "Bunnyhop" yet because you didnt bring both tires up at the same time, but you need to learn this before you try getting them both up at the same time. Its basically the same concept, but in and even shorter period of time.

TRY THIS!! - If your still having triouble, try bunnyhopping OVER something I.E. - A backpack, a cup, ect... Ive found that I have more trouble just bunnyhoping off flat ground than if I try gettig over something. I can usually get a lot higher.

I hope this helped and if you have any more questions, just ask

when i was learning.. i first started poping my front end up very high, witht he method described above, then forcing it straight back down so i could get the feel for the rear of the bike coming back up and still have an easy landing.

this causeing more a of a "one-two" action than a hop.. but after that i progressed to pushing the bike out and down a bit to get the actual hop.

i still suck at it =\

You can do that, but I think that is it a little bit of cheating b/c if you are not careful, you will learn to "lift" the bike with your legs instead of bunnyhopping (sp?) it

Drop your saddle. The lower you get, the more thrust you can lunge up with. Once you get the front tire to a decent height, push forward on the handle bars. The rest of the bike will follow. At the same time you are pushing forward with handlebars (at the exact same time) simply jump up. The momentum of the bike will allow the pedals to follow your feet. Practice that about 10 thousand times then come back and tell us how you are doing.

How much does your bike weigh. Better yet, how much do you weigh? Do you have good strength?

you dont need strength... its much more technique oriented than for brute power

Wow, I've been bunnyhopping for awhile but after reading this thread I realized I've been doing it the wrong way...No wonder I can't get much height and distance O_o

So now I'm doing it the proper way which I suck at but I'm going to work on it. I can't really explain the way I do it though...Kinda hard. Maybe I'll get a video sometime.

trials-online.com has some good videos and some other cool stuff. Go to the watch videos box down on the bottom then scroll down on left bar to hop/bunnyhops section.
