Need new shifters for old-school Shimano 7-speed drivetrain
I used to be heavily into mountain biking 10+ years ago but haven't been in on it since then. I've since sold off my MTB, but was gifted one by my brother a couple of months ago. It's a '93 Schwinn Paramount with full Shimano DX components. For starters I don't dig the thumb shifters, and to top it off, the front shifter's base is broken and needs to be replaced. I've been scouring eBay for some tried'n'true Gripshift X-ray's, but haven't had any luck with them. I thought about going for some equally old-school 7-speed (or 8-speed) LX STI shifters, but can't seem to find any on the cheap either.
What kinds of shifters would you all recommend other than those two? I'd really like to keep this cheap (in eBay terms) in the $20-$30 range if at all possible. I don't plan on logging tons of miles on the bike, but would like it to be functional for whenever I do take it out.
I really don't want to go with the cheapo Gripshift 7-speed stuff seen on eBay frequently for $15-$20 new, but would rather buy something used and better quality for roughly the same price. Any recommendations I'm not already thinking of?
