Getting a new bike soon...
 

I recently decided I need to step it up from my old bike a bit, but I want something unique, and simple.

I don't care to put a lot of time into working on a bike, and I don't mind spending some money.

Basically, I just want a bike that won't break... So when i start on a old trail for 10 miles, I won't have to walk 5... (I have bad luck, if anything breaks, it's when I'm as far away as possible).

I guess this might be a bad idea, but would it be rediculous to build it with simple gears? only 1 crank wheel, and 5-6 rear gears?

I know I'll get a hard-tail frame, and maybe no front shocks, but I'm undecided...

I'm also looking at few gears, and widely spread too...

SOME QUESTIONS:

What do you think about a solid frame with those gears?

I've seen people on the trail with no spoke rims, what does everyone think of them?

Also, anyone have comment on air-free tires?

What about disc brakes? my current bike has them, but I don't notice a difference...

1. there's nothing wrong with having a 1 * 8 setup
2. nothing wrong with a solid fork, personal preference really
3. I've never personally seen anybody with no spoke rims on the trails. Are they extremely heavy? Will they take the hits?
4. air-free tires... you mean like non- pneumatic? Like solid rubber? lol Or something funky like a tweel... lol
5. Depend on what your braking needs are.

And a question of my own:

Are you trying to stand out simply for the sake of doing so? (imho, this is foolish) Or do you actually believe there are advantages in this setup?

I saw a guy with a Giant near a long trail head. He had on solid 6 point wheels. I won't trust any with some miles untill I abuse them in the street or on a rough trail...

Tires: I mean the ones you find online that are solid rubber with air pockets that can't get flat. They are nearly solid, but they have enough little pockets that they have some give to them, and no flats.

I mainly just want a Solid bike that won't break, and one that I can really crank down on that won't lag, or slip, between gears. I just want something I can change gears in and get an immediate responce...

I don't need the other crank wheels...

Do you perfer any frames more then others? Any particular ones that won't give any nightmares to use other parts with? any that are very brand part specific, so that I can't put any but that brand on it? I want one that I can just bolt different stuff to.

And, how much should I pay for a crank arm/crank wheel/peddle assembly, and how much should I pay for the rear gears and derailer assembly?

Also, does anyone know the usual crank to wheel ratios for usual mountain bikes? I just need the 1 X 1 and 3 X (max)5-8.

so you don't care about weight? At all? I mean you're going to have a hard time crankin this thing up a hill, especially without the better gear ratios. Because chances are, the 6 point wheels have to be pretty heavy to endure the same stuff that the spoked ones do. Also, the solid rubber wheels with air pockets also sound heavy.
