Brand Names: Specialized or Gary Fisher

Hey There,

Been doing trails off and on for many years. Now going to upgrade to a more serious setup/ hardtail. If you were to choose equal stats bikes (and similarly priced of course), who would you go with, Specialized or Gary Fisher?

I have heard lots about Specialized, they have been around for awhile. Not so much about Gary Fisher. Trek, Kona, Klein, GT, Santa Cruz, Giant. Not so much about Gary Fisher, though I am sure they are pretty good as well.

Id test ride them both and choose the one that feels better.

Just try them both out... remember, there are others out there too... look at DMR, KHS, and Giant. (just looked at a DMR, it was a nice mtb/dh combo)

Giant is also good . Some riders actually are moving away from Spesh cuz year by year they are releasing more of their own forks, wheels, hubs. Heck, they might even make their own driveterrain in the future

No, I was just wondering what made Specialized better that Fisher "without a doubt".

Only reason I don't like Specialized is because they sell them at Scheels. I figure that's just one step up from buying at Wall Mart. Gary Fisher is owned by Trek, and warranty claims are easy as pie at your LBS.

But, yeah. Ride em both and whatever you like better....get it.

Really? I didn't know. Thanks. I don't like Scheels, what are they like Dick's Sporting? Departments style...kinda like Ironhorse or Mongoose, or one of those CCM's... oh man, CCM and Raleigh..!

I've had a Gary Fisher for years and couldn't be happier. I ended up buying my wife a Fisher two years ago, too, and she loves it. Cost and components being similar, go with the lighter one.

Spec vs Gary Fisher

I had decided to NOT get a Spec or Giant cause too many people have them so they are far from anything special. Gary Fisher has sufficient history for me (does anyone have more?). The bikes look good too. But I still looked around. GT would have been OK also. Eventually, it came down to components. I wanted v-brakes, not disc (i ride trails out into the woods and banging a disc on a rock is sometimes tough to avoid). In my price bracket 6 or 7 hundred cdn, most mtb have disc. Gary Fisher Marlin doesn't. Tried for sizing. OK. Got it.

In the end, everything about it is great except for that crap alivio FD. I'll try taking it back to the LBS where I bought it for an adjustment, but, really, I don't think it will ever shift right. I knew about this issue before I bought it but kinda hoped the reports were wrong. nope.
