    Norco Query

Getting back in to biking after some 20-odd years, and with the assistance of this forum, have tracked down a rather limited number of bikes available in my area . . . three to be exact. 2007 Norco Storm, 2006 Norco Pinnacle and 2006 Kona Blast. Still trying to get my had around spec's, but started to consider the Storm (who knows . . perhaps aesthetics at this point). The shop will slap one together in the next few days for me to check out . . . no strings attached. As my next option is a 500 km round trip to the next nearest shop, thought I'd query as to any user opinions on the Storm (or the other two for that matter).

Adult male, 210 lb/6 ft. Predominately rural gravel roads with some offroad into ravines, cultivated fields; 4-season use. Heading to the "big city" opens up the options to pretty much anything, albeit what is currently in stock during what I'm understanding is late season for bike shopping. Appreciate any and all comments. thanks

its a Norco, thats a great start i think u just found your dream ride... ok, now for checking out some specs...

a budget would be nice though...

the Storm looks sweet, for what you need
pinnacle is ok, but definitly cheaper
blast is good, a good compromise between the pinnacle and storm, but once again, budget?

a good rule is, if you can afford it, get it. some people think, get a cheap bike to see if you like the sport. one problem, the sport can offer a lot more, so get what you can. but with somethings, dont waste your money (spokes, cables, etc)

Yeah, if I'm looking for advice a budget would be useful. Looking sub $1K Cdn. FYI, best deal offered on the Storm, the most expensive of the lot, was $700 "or so". thanks again

where do you live, that there is only one lbs that is within 500 km. i know this is an opinion, but i personally wouldn't buy a full kona bike, i would buy the frame, but i think they charge for components that the bike just doesn't have. They put okay components on there bikes and charge for good components. the 2005 blast wasn't too bad it was mostly deore, the 2006 is acera not as good as deore

Live at the edge of the Cdn prairie in East-Central Alberta. Edmonton is the closest major center and offers a good selection, but it's about 250 km away. So if any problems its a bit of a drive or (the rural thing) fix it yourself. That and the manic pace of the 'patch of late make that trip not all that easy. The local shop, nice guys/place, is a multi-sport store. Earlier in the season, they actually would have had a fairly good selection given their location. So now its "humming and hahing" . . . something I don't like doing all that much. I'd rather get something and ride. But much has changed over the past years from when I last used to race about so I'd like to have some idea of reasonable vs avoid.

Wouldn't Red Deer be closer to you than Edmonton? If I remember they have a pretty decent bike shop. Also if your up for the drive I would seriously suggest going down to Calgary cause I hate to say it but they have a much better bike scene down there then in Edmonton. That includes bike shops.

just because im 14, it doesnt mean i dont know my bikes

well, your budget is nice, so try out all the bikes, and figure out which one feels best. and you can always change stuff on it that you dont like.

Hey, I listen to everyone . . . . been doing that for 50 years now . . . then sort it out and decide what the hell is what (Hah! Right or wrong, I sort it out!). Fact of the matter out where I live is that the local "kids" tuned me into the current state of affairs re: biking . . . . led to this forum . . . while an older fellow laid it all down for me in the sports shop that offers bikes along with blades, boards, and what-have-you. Really helped as I hadn't been riding for about 25 years.

Forums such as this, verrrrry good and the variety of comments/opinions appeals to me.

As to the bikes in question, the shop is putting the Storm together for a test drive on Thursday. Perhaps I come home with this one. We'll see. Nevertheless, pumped as I was some 30 odd years ago when I picked up my first modified road bike.
