My mother was raped by a kickstand, and one of them shot my father.

Actually, the main reason is that they are an object that can easily get caught on something on the trail.

Partly, I'm sure, it's a style thing. But I also know from personal experience that kickstands aren't much use on a mountain bike trail where there's no pavement. Where I live, the kickstand point would just sink into the soft ground and/or sand as the bike slowly toppled over. Kickstands also flop around around on bumpy trails. Back when I was new, I rode with a kickstand. I actually had it flop into the full-down position a couple of times in response to bumps. I eventually got rid of it, and I've not bothered with one since.

On a commuter bike, a kickstand makes more sense, though I've had mixed success in that area. My current commuter bike doesn't have a stand. I may try one of those chainstay-mounted stands on it though.

I think a kickstand could be dangerous. If it were to pop open while riding over stuff, it could easily launch you in an unexpected way. Additionally, it also is a spear-like object that would do a good job embedding itself in your body in a crash.

I also hear kickstands ride blue bikes. That's just a rumour, though.

Besides, if there is an object tall and sturdy enough, just lean the back tire against the object. The bike will stay upright with any issues. I recently put mine against a flower pot then my SO's against my rear tire and they were still standing when I got back. Works with just about any wall, pole, tree, etc.

I was at a LBS recently and the price tag on a badass $3,000+ bike said, "Kickstand - $10 Extra".

    Freakin' hilarious.

i got rid of my kickstand because
    1) it made an annoying boioioioiinggg noise every time i hit something. and
    2) i went off a smallish jump (~1foot?) and the kickstand popped down and i didn't notice, it automatically comes up if you pedal, but i was coasting, then i made a left turn, the kickstand hit the ground whilst pointing forward and i wrecked big time

my Roadmaster bike had a kickstand that was el cheapo, but that meant it took 15lbs of force to put it down, which meant it would never come down on a jump, i thought about stealing that kickstand before selling the bike but something about a Roadmaster kickstand next to my Avid BB7s would look funny to me.

I found that kickstands add way too much horse power to my ride (+57HP) which is way too much for just trail riding.... so now i just use a yellow jersey and some carbon fiber parts to keep my whip down to a medeocre 439 HP.... but when I do the tour day france I will def. put a couple kickstands on....

The worst bike crash I have ever witnessed in real life was caused by a kickstand coming down when a friend of mine was doing some urban riding on a borrowed bike. I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

The old Funn LoveSeat was pretty much a banana seat.

Some people are just like Slinky's. Not really good for anything but they bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Kickstands hold a bike upright. I lay mine on the ground so it gets used to the idea and doesn't get upset when I crash. So far its working.
