newbie needing advice
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and kinda new to mtn biking. I was really into bmx back in my teens,, back in the 80's,,, Now I picked up a used bike about 12 yrs ago and rode it alot at first but didnt have any decent trails near the house and no time to drive to any.. So the bike sat,, flash forward,, I've moved to Jim Thorpe Pa,, I can get to great trails from the house in 3 minutes on the bike,, So I'm planning on riding more,, I have a freind who I ride dirt bikes with who lives 5 minutes from me, He rides his mtn bike every day.. Now the issues with my bike,, When I bought it,, it was a bike built from spare parts, some very good spare parts,, from a local bike shop,, it was the owners play bike he used for tricks etc.. Its a trek 8000,, He ditched the suspension forks for some "project two" solids and the brakes just plain stink.. I need to upgrade to at least v-brakes and find a set of forks,, but which ones?? At what point $ wise should I start looking for a modern used bike? Any advice would be apreciated,, Also I'm 5'6" and 200# but I'm not soft,, I can still press 225+ and leg press over 700#,, I just get winded thinking about going up the stairs,, which is why I'm going back to a bike,,
Thanks,,
Steve

The last owner told me the fork "were the exact geometry of the suspension forks that came off" but I dont think so,, They seem to tucked in rake wise and are real twitchy.
Thanks,

thats better, it was late here too and my eyes were goin all over the place.
what type of riding do you do? it seems like XC? and a budget would help a lot. and are you not going disc because you dont wantt to or your bike doesnt have mounts? discs are more consitent i find, and theyre easier to work with than you think.

No mounts for disc, but so far the forks I'm finding all can go disc,, Might stay rim in the back and disc up front.. I plan on xc but the terrain around here is rocky and mountainous,, well as mountainous as Pennsylvania gets.. Also,, this might sound strange,, but back in the day racing bmx we always had a fatter tire on the front for cornering and thinner tire in the rear for less drag/speed, is that done at all in mtn bikes or should they be matched?
Thanks,
Steve
