Adding a front suspension

Hello all, I am extremly new to biking in general so bare with me. Ive been riding an old Trek 830 good condition all summer and i am purchasing a road bike to replace it as my commuter and was looking into adding a front suspension to the 830. How would one go about doing this.

A good place to start would be finding out what size steering tube you have so you know what you'll be looking for in a fork. Also, I could be wrong but any suspension fork might throw off the geometry/weaken the frame if it wasn't already designed to have one. All said and done you may be better off trying to find a decent used bike on craigslist such as an older Gary Fisher hardtail.
