Offraod variations
Now as you may guess I am fairly new to this stuff. But I am really enjoying the MTB'ing I am doing. I am currently looking at getting another bike (current is a GT Outpost '07). Now just out of curiosity sake, what would you say the differences are between the following:-
Mongoose
GT
Giant
Which shall I go for (if a brand is particular to riding style)?
Obviously depending on the style of riding one would like to do. But to me, XC and MTB are the same thing. The terrain I am usually riding over is mostly gravel, mud and rocks (if that helps). How would one differentiate what style of riding you are doing? (XC, Trail, etc.)
Thanks

Throw the stick!!!!
Out of those three I would go for Giant. I just think they offer a lot of "bang for the buck". Cross country sounds like the type of riding you are doing as long as it doesn't involve drops larger than a foot or two and no large jumps.

Do you have an idea of how much you want to spend on a new bike? If you like Giant this would be a good place to start.......https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/...in/1283/29372/

There are so many classifications these days. Most of the general public fall in the "Trail Bike" category which lies somewhere between All Mountain and Cross Country (XC).
All manufacturers will have some form of trail bike. A Trail bike is not as light as an XC bike, but probably more durable. It is not as durable as an All Mountain bike, but most likely be a little more efficient.
For example:
Giant Anthem: XC
Giant Trance: Trail
Giant Reign: All Mountain
I only use Giant as an example b/c you mentioned them in your post.
My assumption is that you will be looking for a hardtail mountain bike with somwhere around 4" of travel in front that will be durable enough to ride off road. Something hopefully a little less than 30lbs that you can ride all day w/o killing yourself.
The best thing for you to do is follow what the others have posted:
How tall are you?
How much do you weigh?
How much could you spend?

I give Giants XTC Alliance top marks. The frame is made up of both aluminum and composite with great componets. I would check it out myself if I was in the market for a good basic HT.
Thats a joke right?

Well as I mentioned, I already own a GT so I am kind of fond of them to be particular. However, I hear great things from all my friends about Giant. So why specifically Giant over GT or Schwinn (or any other bike for that matter)?
I am 5'7" tall.
I weigh in at 60kg's (plus minus).
I am looking at around R5,000 (not sure how much that amounts to in US$)
Thanks for the help!

R5,000 (South African rands) is around $714
60kg's is approximately 120pounds
Was thinking of the GT Avalanche, would it be much of an upgrade from the Outpost?
I quite like the geometry of the GTs, but what would you guys recommend?
Raleigh any good?

Sure you did. Maybe if you had the ability to construct a sentence properly, people would actually understand what you had to say.
Nope, never happened. Clearly, you're delusional.
Right, cuz of the avatar thing. And now that I have you're avatar, it's obvious that you and I are the same person! We're both stupid Canadian kids arguing inside someone else's thread!

Maybe not. BUT you are acting nothing like me. You're being an ass and not really helping anyone out. You ARE, however, acting just like Pete, but instead of being mildly entertaining you're just being sad.

two of them are made by the same Canadian company...and Giant is the world's largest bike mfg based in Taiwan
But to your question, its all about how much you peddle:
XC...you want to peddle up hills and go fast on the flats, so a triple chain ring and a light bike works best
FR...for those that like tricks, jumps, lots of bumps, but still peddle up hills...usually a double chain ring, bigger brakes, a heavier bike
DH...let gravity do most of the work. A single chain ring, heavy bike
another way to look at the bikes...XC, saddle higher than bar, FR, saddle about the same height, DH, saddle lower than the handlebar
