A little advice needed, never raced MTB before.

My first post on the mtb portion of BF. Someone suggested to me I should race a local race. It's an end of season thing and quite a few triathletes (my sport) roadies and such take part in this one as a end of season race. 27 miles non technical, some guys do it on cross bikes. I have a dept store mt bike I bought for a winter commuter. Wasn't meant to be anything but a beater bike, it's never been off road, I've never been off road. I'm looking to simply finish in one piece if I do this, bike finishing in one piece is optional.

What do I really need to pay attention to in order to do this, not racing just going out to have fun with the guys and finish this. Distance is not an issue, my skill level and the quality of my ride are the issues.

Since it is a wal mart bike, check your bike before you go. Shifters, brakes, derailleurs, handlebars, seats, skewers. I mean it. Everything.

I thought about doing that, it's definitely a better bike than the mtb bike. And i have cross tires for it. However they are predicting snow for the race, Race is Nov 10th.

The Ice Man? Have fun. I'm looking for a ticket still, since I was out of town the DAY they went on sale. From my understanding, it's really non-technical and more a ride on a path with a little single track thrown in. Take the cross and have fun.

Dress in wicking layers & try to keep your feet dry.

+1 On 'cross tires. With rain and snow the 'cross racing just gets better. But I'm from the Puget Sound area.

Thanks for the replies guys. Now I need to find a ticket into the race. Got a few leads for transfers, which they allow.

Sorry to hijack your thread but i have my first race in 3 weeks. Im excited.
I picked a stupid race to enter.
The State Championships.
Oh well , its the last race for the year and i just wanna race. New armour on the way for it, and ive ridden the new track the last 3 days straight, and plan to as much as possible before the race. Its one fast downhill track, for me anyway.
