Back into mtbing! first time out in 2 years, need advise.
Hi, from 8th grade through highschool mountain biking was just what I did every week. But when we hit college and my riding partner/best friend left the city I put my hobby on the back burner. I've always worked out and ran so my fitness is up to par, and I just found out because I hit the trails today for the first time in two years! I thank my buddy for buying his Specialized Rock Hopper, I'm jealous.
Here's where I need some advise, I'm currently riding on a black 1999 GT Aggressor with stock plastic pedals, WTB Velociraptors(loved'm), a bent rear rim that knocks my rear breaks every revolution, original grips and the stock taint-killer seat that all need changing or fixing. I know I can get a far superior bike that is lighter, stronger, faster, and equipped with disc brakes for around the same cost of mine back in 2000 when my pops bought it for me($350-400), but this bike is making due and I'd rather just replace some wear items until I decide to break the bank. The tires I want to get will need to be double duty, my raptors worked great for me over the years and getting another set would work but that's just boring, I like change and would like to try something different. I'm the same way with track tires for my car. http://wheelworld.com/itemdetails.cf...gId=39&id=1371 These are what I'm looking at, I like the red sidewall too since they'd match some of my gear including my shoes :) Any suggestions on DH or XC tires that can see double duty? And if possible, with a red theme! |

I would be scared to slip off them 'cause the shins will suffer, but I have not yet. http://gallery.photo.net/photo/6422706-md.jpg http://gallery.photo.net/photo/6400526-md.jpg |
Scelia those look perfect. I like the design. Anyone familiar with this style?
http://jensonusa.com/store/product/P...ap+Pedals.aspx Is the pricing for each? |

Again, is this pricing for each or pair? I'm unexperienced with aftermarket pedal pricing. |
Its pricing for a pair - it alway is.

Thanks BFG, I'm going to purchase from my LBS I just wanted to get some price estimates. Though I may jump on some deals they can't touch, I'd pay a few more to support the LBS but when it comes down to it saving is saving ya know?
I have a question. The Maxxis Minion DH tires I'm looking at are really soft compound apparently. "* Super Tacky; 42a compond designed to grip better, for downhill race use only " Is that too soft if I ride a mile to and from of hilly streets to my local trails? |
Stay away from Odyssey Triple-Traps. They look aggressive but they are not. There is so much flat surface-area there in the alloy "teeth" plus the flat-topped points on tha cage. It ends up making them not grippy enough - - and then the cage will claw you ferociously when your feet do slip off.
Can you tell I've owned some? In my newbie days I though caged pedals were the schizz; then I wised up and went to pinned platforms and have had them ever since. The Crank Bros. would be a better choice (but there are even better ones). |
I can see what you mean, I'll avoid the Odyssey Triple-Traps like a plague.
I just picked up a set of Michelin Mountain X'treme tires from the LBS, I read up on them online and his prices weren't too bad. I also was about to get some nice studded platform pedals made by a company something like MSHCHSH or something weird(he said it was a Giant brand) but I only had so much in cash, no credit, I should've known. |
Here are the pedals I bought for my bike-
http://www.danscomp.com/images/produ...5104_Black.gif They are very light(magnesium) and grip my shoes well and at 19.99 USD they are a good deal. |
What brand are those? I'm kinda set on the pedals I saw at the shop for $35. They're lighter than the $65 Primo ones with the really smooth bearings, and have bearings that are similar in quality. I just cant remember the brand, it wasnt even a word. MSHCHSH?

I bought them from http://www.danscomp.com/ I happen to live within 10 miles from the store, so I did not have to order online. They carry quite a few different platform pedals in stock. |

Tires, check, pedals, check, bent rim taking care of tomorrow, check.
Anyone want to recommend me some good grips for under $20? Mine are worn and torn at the ends. |

I think I may upgrade to a better suspention fork pretty soon, and then a new frame later. I'm thinking RS Reba? |

It isn't. But a propos, I did give up my big ring for a bashguard, and I'd never go back.

Yeah, everyone will want to have a bike that completely mismatches in parts. According to you a good looking bike is the new chartreuse plaid. I'd sooner build up a bike in which the parts go together well.
