As a lot of members on this forum say; go to your local bike shop and ride the bikes in that price range and pick what feels best to you.

Well, you'll get alot better spec for the $$ on a single speed - but you have to be damn sure that's what you want, I think it's a great way to go.

Try this: https://brodiebikes.com/2007/2007_bikes/hellion.php

My friend, matt, has one, it's pretty sweet.

fireboi, Thanks but my local shop, like many others, don't stock all the brands. Like the one that mullett suggested above I never heard of before. I would like to hear from people who like a specific bike and have tried it and tell us why they liked it. Thanks for the info M.

Do look at used stuff in that price range, if you are at all confident working on bikes. Mountain bikes depreciate pretty rapidly, and seem to get ridden off-road pretty infrequently. I've gotten really sweet bikes by picking up a model that's a few years old.

Buy whatever bike you like in that price range at your local bike shop. At a given price, no one manufacturer's bike is going to be significantly better than another's. Ride your options, if you can, and pick the one that has the color and feel you like the best. You'll be fine.

That being said, this time of year is a good time to get a deal on close-outs, so your $700-900 can be stretched a bit further if a dealer has your size in a bike being discounted.

If you'd like specific advice, let us know what bikes are available at your local shops.

I'm surprised no ones asked this yet: What type of riding are you doing? It's ok if you don't know the proper name, just describe it (Trail or dirt jump? etc.)

Norco, I ride mostly city paved streets. I want the front shox tho but dont really care about disc brakes and no sinle speeds. Thanks for your feedback.

Good point. Also, please read the sticky:

https://www.bikeforums.net/mountain-biking/67259-please-read-before-asking-question-mtb-faq.html

Most bike manufacturers make a decent bike at this level. Little better than entry level. Drive to a bike shop.. If you have to drive an hour it will be worth it. Believe me. Go to the LBS. . Then thank God they speak your language.

Now is a good time to find deals. Right when the lbs gets in the new models the old ones will go on sale.
I picked up a 07 Bianchi Mutt 7700 for $1100, regular $1699.
