This weekend my buddy and I were out riding at a place called Farmdale which is around Peoria, IL and he ate it pretty hard off a wooden jump sorta thing, flipped over his bars and basically did a piledriver into the ground with his face. Needless to say, he had a concussion. We didn't actually find this out until about 10 minutes later when he started to ask me "dude, what just happened?", and "okay, my face really hurts and I know I just wrecked, but what just happened?". At that point I decided it was time to call it day and start back to the car. After he had forgotten and re-asked me what happened about 10 times he finally started to come out of it, thankfully, and I started a battery of memory recall stuff just to make sure. Anyway, has anybody here ever gotten knocked so hard you started to forget stuff? That was seriously terrifying, especially since I couldn't find the trail that led out of the loop we were riding and back to the fire road. Oh, he wasn't wearing a helmet, and is now getting one because of this incident. Probably helped that I'll refuse to ride unless he wears one. Hell, that was an experience.

Never been knocked stupid, knock on wood, but I have landed with my sternum on the end of the bars and the other end of the bars was stuck in the ground. I've had my breath knocked out but this was like the atomic version of it! Glad your friend was okay, not a helmet nanny but I have some friends that ride trail with helmets but ride on the road thru mall parking lots and such w/none, makes me very nervous.

I have a bmx bike that i putz around the neighborhood on. One day I was studying for finals and went outside to stretch my legs on it. I didn't think i needed a helmet because i was just messing around. Somehow i ate it and woke up with my head and top of my shoulder bleeding. I remember going inside, and then i remember a little from the trip to the hospitle and i remember being in the E.R. waiting room. My dad freaked out 'cuz I kept asking what happened over and over again, so he insisted on going to the hospitle. Anyhow by the time i got there it was probably about 1.5 hours after it happened and I had pretty much snapped out of it. They checked me out and said it was just a bad concussion, and told me no excercise for 3 weeks (yeah right!). Anyhow, moral of the story is always wear a helmet even when you think you don't need one! (oh, I always wore one before, just not when playing around ont the bmx bike)

I doubt they "just" said it was a bad concussion. If the doc said the words "bad concussion" much more than a simple check up would have been involved, including a CT scan and what not. You may have had a concussion, but a bad concussion is a different story.

Actualy because i was disoriented for so long they did scan me and said it was a "bad concussion" and told me to take it easy for 3 weeks, but that was it.

This happened to a friend of mine about a year ago while we were riding a smooth, wide trail. He tried to do a bunny hop at speed and turned his wheel sideways. He managed to land on his head (he was wearing a helmet) and got a concussion. We didn't know it at the time and everything seemed fine until 5 minutes into the ride he started asking what happened and what he was doing on the trail, etc. We took him to the doctor and he had some tests and they confirmed that it was a concussion. At first he couldn't remember anything that happened for about 10 minutes or so after the accident and a few seconds before the accident. Then he started remembering what happened before the accident but still can't remember what happened up to 10 minutes after.

This happened to me during a hockey game once. I was skating full speed then someone tripped my from behind and I slid head first into the boards. I was knocked out and didn't regain consciousness till I was in the hospital. I didn't know how or why I got to the hospital when I woke up. Heck I still can't remember that I even had a hockey game but that’s what everyone tells me that happened so I'll take there word for it.

Glad to hear your friends ok though. And yeah...make sure he gets a helmet cause it could have been much worse.

Glad your friend is ok. My brother was snow skiing and feel on a sheet of ice and was "knocked stupid" He could only remember things for about 5 minutes and then he would start asking the same questions over and over again. It was kind of funny at the time until I heard that he might be like that for a while. It is a scary thing and at least your friend recovered quickly, it took my brother about 3 or 4 hours to recover and then he couldn't remember anything except hitting his head.

Na, I was born that way. And don't seem to be able to adapt to a better way with age either......

I certainly am. Nobody ever deserves to get a concussion or paralyzed or dead from a fall, but if your buddy was riding (over jumps) without a helmet, he couldn't have been knocked stupid, or at least, he couldn't have been knocked much stupider.

By stupid, I meant a debilitation of functions. But yeah, I've never understood/ still don't understand why anybody doesn't wear a helmet. I wear one everytime I ride, with the exception of between classes on campus. But hell, the guy is stubborn and it sucks that it took something like this to make him want a helmet. One of my good friends fell off the bed of a pickup truck and had to have major brain surgery to relieve pressure, I think. It wasn't moving either, so I figure if you up that force by ~10 there is a serious mtb accident. And to everybody who said he was stupid to begin with, no he's a very smart guy and saying stuff like that is a good way to sound ignorant, yourself. But anyway, he's 32 y.o. and I think the fact that he has been riding since childhood has jaded his sense of vulnerability, leading him to believe something like this wouldn't happen to him. Wrooooong.

I never crashed on a bike and got a concussion, but there was an incidant I had while skiing. I was about 12 years old and took off on a jump that was probably the same size as me. I guess I must've had my weight too far back b/c next thing I knew the tips of my skiis were pointed straight up in the air and the back of my head was smashing into the snow.

I was with my Dad, and he told me I asked him, "What time is it?" about 12 times and couldn't remember what resort we were at either. We called it a day and I only suffered minor brain damage. Just kidding about the brain damage.

Just a suggestion: If you, or a friend, ever gets knocked stupid (ie loses consciousness, forgets the incident, etc etc) even for a brief time, go to the hospital. Large vessels inside your head can tear, or be weakened and burst hours later. Then it may be too late. Just my .02$
