Go ride some bikes, buy the one that feels real niiiiice. All hardtails designed for XC and that are/around $600 meet your criteria so I'd say you've got some riding to do sir.

Yes, I would stay away from Next. If it's sold at a place that...uh.. sells bikes specifically, you'll be fine. When you ride a frame that doesn't feel right you will know that frame is one to stay away from. Ones that appeal to your specific body shape will be the ones to gravitate to.
You can wander into any old shop and ask for bikes in your price range. Ride some, have a good time circling the parking lot. Imagine various positions you might like to perform while riding. Now try some you may really need to do. Try them out. Lean waaay back, see how fast you can get your butt behind/below the seat. Flail around some. Carve some imaginary berms. After a few bikes you may have some favorites. You may find them all to be similar. If this is the case find the bike with the specialest decoration scheme. Might be that black trips your trigger. Mines green. Gets me every time. Specially those bright lime-esque greens. Mhhmmm.
You probably should do this at a few stores if you have them available. At your price level there will not be much difference in what your buying other than fit and feel. Really with all major brands all the bikes are pretty similar in their respective pricing scale. Just ride some bikes.
