what is a 'splined' crankset?

is that a shimano only thing?

I think splined the the shimano equilent to ISIS... im not too sure though..

Its not shimano only, But they make the XTR crank interface so its only compatible with an XTR bb. ISIS is also splined, but it is just differently shaped. Splined just means there are those little teeth coming out of the end of the bb (or hub on the new shimano XTR disc brakes)

I believe Shimano's is called Octagon. It is spaced differently than ISIS, which is made by other manufacturer's; so you must specify which you want if you order new BB's or cranks.

OctaLINK, but yeah, it a larger diameter hollow spindle that has "Flutes" or "ridges" on the male side (spindle).
