Fairly new to disk brakes. Had a pair Hayes 8". Just took my brand new bike out for its first ride. It has Juicy 3 6". Tried them at LBS and they had no braking power and hoped it would get alot better after they set in. Rode it down a long long steep street riding the brakes. Braking power got a lot better. But i am still not happy. On the trail today i couldn't even lock up the front. Is this because it is cold outside(right at freezing) or do i just need better brakes like an 8" and maybe a few steps up in the Juicy line. My Hayes 8' had enough power but i never rode it in the cold. Oh ya, i am a Clyde.

your brakes should work fine in the cold. did they come with a greasy protective coating from the store?

One more question. Is there any power difference from the Juicy 3 to the 7 ? I know the Code has to have more.

not familiar with the 3. did it replace the 5? there isn't really any power difference between 5 and 7 if that helps.

What Hayes model are they?

They were Hayes 9 on my old bike, but the brakes in question are Juicy Three's

and Juicy Three is one down from the Five. Thanks for the info MX, looks like i will just try an 8" disk before i upgrade to the Juicy Five or higher

I find the Hayes nine have much more of a direct stop, even compared with Juicy 5. The Nine's are a very powerful brake (when set up correctly), so you probably aren't getting the same response with your juicy threes on your new bike.

But yeah, like MX said, try sticking an 8" rotor on the front (you will need an 8" adapter for the front fork as well for the caliper), see if that helps.

The 3 is the same as the 5 brake function wise other than:

- no split clamp at the lever
- no rotateable banjo fitting at caliper
- lever blade doesn't have the pop it forward so ti doesn't break in a wreck/so you don't squeeze the lever by accident when working on brakes with the wheel out, such as when bleeding the system.

I've had two sets of 5 brakes used in some temps down into the single digits; didn't notice any difference in brake feel or power.

i saw a bike in the shop with a set. I think they look weird but they sure felt firm and positive in the shop. If you can tell anything by that.

just get an 8" rotor and front adapter for the juicys. if you're still not happy with it, then get the hayes stuff in 6" version, and use the 8" rotor and adapter you bought for the juicys. (hayes/avid adapters for the same rotor sizes can be swapped)

your brakes may also just need a bit more break in time. and in the wet, IMO, resin/non-metallic pads work much better with the juicys when things are wet.
