Hydraulic means fluid actuated. Like the brakes on a car. Uses brake fluid.

mechanical means cable actuated. Uses a normal brake lever and uses a cable to actuate the brakes.

Hydros: change pads, bleed and replace the hose once in a while.

Mechancials Change pads, change cable, change housing every once in awhile. Check cable tension before every ride.

Is the search function still broken? God, how many times do we have to go through this? Just click back 2, 3, 4 pages and all your questions will be answered! This is one of the MOST discussed topics here.

That's all that there really is to it besides turning the adjustment knob(s) on a bb7/bb5 to set the pad distance.

Yeah, sure have missed ol' Pete. Not as much fun without him and he works very hard at abusing people.

But, back on the subject, since the OP seems genuinely determined...................

Scroll down the page and you'll see his new username 'Pete-Fagerlin', and then a few more posts down a goodbye from moderator Brian.

Indeed, hopefully a final goodbye (and good riddance).

Wow. You sure are a world class whiner, aren't you?

Really naive as well.

Maybe you can post a whole bunch of wacky advice to make you feel better about yourself...

mechy's are pretty much the way to go. light, no maintenance, no adjustments, bomb proof, super modulation with a skilled finger at the helm.

no need to add heavy, fluid filled devices to your pedal bicycles. i mean save that stuff for something with an engine.

I find the hydros take less care and maintenance. I'll never go back to mechanicals.

Well I highly doubt I'll be taking a hybrid mountain biking. I'll use a real MTB for that.
