Is Wahoo Disc for 550 a ripeoff?
Hi all,
I am new to these forums but not that new to mountain bikes. I just haven't had a bike for about a year. I used to have a Speciallized hard rock that I used for riding around to meet with my friends and whatnot before I got a car.
I want to get a new bike because well the old one is gone, long story and I want a new one to ride for exercise and to get to campus without using my car. I would also like to ride some trails once I get more familiar with the bike and it's capabilities. I basicly have narrowed down what I want to get and I believe either tomorrow or the next day I will be going to get a Wahoo Disc. I just want to make sure before I commit $550 of my hard earned money that this is truely a good investment and is not a ripeoff. I looked up the msrp price and it is $550 but I think I saw some internet places have it for cheaper. I don't really like the idea of buying this kinda purchase of the internet because it would be a huge pain to return.
Please let me know what you think.

Somebody kicked in the back rim while I was at school so I didn't get to use it much last year and when I was leaving for the summer. I took a chance and locked it to a bike rack on campus when I came back to start the new school year it wasn't there. So now I have a chance to start new with a fresh bike.

Check with the campus police/local police. At my school, when the spring session lets out, the "abandoned" bikes have about a 3-5 week grace period before the locks are cut and claimed as property of the university/city. There is a good chance this is what happened to your bike, depending on your lock I guess. The locks I use on my bike would allow only the parts which can be removed by tools, around the locks, to be stolen. It would have to be cut to get the frame and fork.

You would be getting it from your Local Bike Shop(LBS)? I would say do it, it's a great starter bike.
And DirtPedalerB was pointing out that you spelled rip wrong (if you didn't catch that)

Yeah I spelled it wrong. I would be getting it from my local bike shop. I read online that people found that the pedals seem to break on wahoo's, is this true?

Every single bike is shipped in a large cardboard box. Whether it be a Trek being shipped from the factory in Taiwan to the States, or a Trek OCLV carbon bike being shipped from Waterloo. All bikes are packaged pretty much the exact same way.
If he were to purchase a bike via the internet it will be in the EXACT SAME packaging as the shop receives it.

I wouldn't stress it. Every bike is going to have a downside. You have to take into consideration that the vast majority of people writing reviews online, have had something wrong with the bike. My shop has sold dozens of Wahoo's and have yet to have a problem with the pedals. And if something does happen that was beyond your control, Trek/Gary Fisher is one of the best companies to deal with in terms of warranties.
