Help Needed - general medical question

I am looking for some advice, and not quite sure on the best location to post. I apologize in advance to those that see this through the cross posts…

I am currently participating in a writing class, and have ridden for a while (blessedly) free of major injuries. The story I am developing focuses on a character that suffers a major accident during a mountain bike race (set in Colorado) – enough that he is told he “will/should never competitively ride again”.

Here is my question. What type of injury, or combination of injuries, would be enough to make a doctor reach that type of conclusion? The rider should still be able to recover (over time, with rehab, etc.)… My original thought was some form of back injury, where part of the spine would need to be fused … does this seem feasible, or are there any other suggestions?

Make him a down hill Dirt jumper who jumped to big and landed wrong, compacting his SPinal cord or breaking it or something.

I read an article a while back on a guy who lost his arm riding. He has adapted and begun riding with only one arm. Pretty amazing. I'm not sure of his name, though.

Your story played out in life July 2006 at the Willamette Pass, OR DH . . . a friend named Bill Kieffer (40+ Expert):

    http://www.ridemonkey.com/forums/sho...ghlight=kiefer

When I saw him last May at the Beacon race in Spokane, he was walking and watching with a c-collar-like harness on. By September he was back on a bike at the Mt. Spokane super-D and talking about working out a one-year bump down to Sport with NORBA until he could fully recover. Just to give you an idea, even though he's a non-pro, Bill is a very motivated, dedicated racer; he's raced the whole NMBS, has been the 40-49 points leader and has gotten 4th and 2nd at the National Championships.
