American Eagle was
the brand name used by the Cohen's,
founders of West Coast Cycles for bikes they had made
by Kuwahara of Japan. These were road and touring bikes.
WCC later changed the name to Nishiki when Howie Cohen
overheard a customer point out how disingenuous it was to use
an American-sounding name on a product from Japan. Howie ran
a contest with the Kuwahara workers and came up with Nishiki...

He's a terrific resource for information on the bicycle industry from
the 1950's on up. Cohen retired at age 37 from West Coast Cycles, but
started a second career distributing Kuwahara's mountain bikes.
