Wide Width Mountain Bike Shoes
 

I have wide feet, and I seek a bicycle shoe that would clip into pedals but have a flush outer sole that would allow me to walk comfortably on pavement when off the bike.

Is that typically a "mountain bike shoe" as opposed to a "road shoe"? Would any "mountain bike shoe" have the same type of clip and sole arrangement?

Most importantly, what shoe brands are known to come in wide widths for American feet?

Considering American feet are pretty much the same as Euro-Feet, I think you'll do fine with Euro sizes....

Mountain bike shoes will have treads on them, but the cleat patterns will be different. Most MTB shoes have two hole patterns. You can either use mountain pedals on your road bike (I'm assuming) or get an adapter to enable to shoe to take three-hole cleats.

Not so. Europeans in general have much narrower feet.

I just bought some sidi mega bullets. Best fitting shoes I've ever owned, because I have wide feet.

I don't know, maybe it's just me, but if the majority of those of us in the US are decendents of Europeans, how did our feet magically grow wider? I have wide feet, but so does my dad, and so did his dad, and I'm guessing his dad too, who was born in Italy.

So why the little Euro feet?

For starters, Napoleon and his many wars, which took the lives of the most able bodied Europeans and left the Continent with (ahem) inferior genetic stock. Then there was that runt named Hitler, and others in between. But that is off topic. Take it up with the History Channel if you have any further issues on the matter. This is not the place for such discussions.

Lake makes some shoes in wide sizes too. I know I got one, forget the exact model but something like Lake Mx101X. The Sidi's are pretty pricey and I think far stiffer than the normal shoe/boot like design of many of the Lake shoes. I think Adidas generally run fairly wide in shoes if you have a chance to try one on they are another brand to check out at least. I've had one pair of Shimano shoes that were borderline wide enough and stretched a bit to become a pretty nice fit for me anyway.

So because of Napolean and Hitler all the wide feet people came to the US? Interesting.

I don't know if European feet are narrower or not, but Euro shoes tend to be narrower. I suffer from a size 9 EEEE which has caused me many problems throughout my life. Thank god for Allan Edmonds and their EEE sizing or I'd be screwed out of dress shoes!

I've done things like melt plastic ski and mountaineering boots to get comfort.

The widest shoes I've seen are the Lakes. The Sidi Mega is wide, but the Lake is wider!

I think one argument for wide American feet might be the proliferance of people with British ancestry. I find most of the people I meet with REALLY wide feet have some sort of Irish, Scottish, British ancestry. The Euro trend of narrow feet seems to stem from Italian, Spanish and some Eastern Euro ancestry. Since Italian leather shoes are what we hear about so much it seems a stigma has been borne!

But, I've never seen friggin' narrower shoes than fuggin' Nike. What the hell is up with that?!?! I have shunned that sharty company just because they've screwed me out of poseur style.

The Sidi Mega is definitely out of my price range. I think $100 US should be enough for a good pair of bicycle shoes for any type of endeavor.

I paid 135 for my sidi bullets.. from universal cycles with the vip coupon and a free shipping credit. You will never find shoes in a wide size for under $100.

i have the same problem. i have very wide feet. i think close to EEEE. i believe, technically, that sidi goes to EE.

i have two pairs. the genius for road and dominator for off road.

you stated you can't afford it? you really need to reconsider. there is a sidi model for around 150. trust me, 50 extra will be worth it! wait until you start getting hot spots on your foot.

lake doesn't have the options that sidi does. in fact, their selection is poor.

i have a barely used gaerne shoe that is narrow. i can't use it any more. :( this is how much nicer the sidi mega is.

sidi is pretty much it for wide shoes. trust me, i looked all over.

Lake is a godsend to people like us. Seriously, I want to never see SIDI mentioned in this thread again. They only pretend to offer wide sizes, they are overpriced and you will be unhappy. Lake is the way, and their wide is wider than SIDI Mega! I've said it before, but it needs hammered in, I guess: Lake's wide is wider than SIDI Mega!!!!!

Any shoe I purchase will be from local suppliers. Only if the shoe fits will I buy it. Mail order doesn't permit me to try on multiple pairs to find the best fit.

It's good to know that Sidi and Lake are two possibilities.

I use the Specialized BG Comp mountain shoes. Wide toe box, flush treads (mountain shoes...), comfy and work great.

I've had good luck with Diadora and Lake, too, in the past.

SIDI? Tried some on and could not find any wide enough for my boat feet.

Nike? Only if you enjoy serious pain! WAY too narrow. Think Lange ski boots of old, if you're a skier.

i didn't say that. i alluded to one of the few.

that's cool, because their availability at online retailers sucks. how are consumers supposed to know it is a wider fit?? all i saw mentioned anywhere was EE, same as Sidi. i already bought gaernes i couldn't use so i wasn't about to buy multiple wide shoes to see which tend to be manufactured wider.

over priced?? i could have sworn i did see a 400+ dollar lake shoe. sidi also makes one that is around 150 in mega size.

i am pretty happy with my sidi road and mtn shoes. but i will certainly check out the lakes in the future because i didn't know their "EE" was so much wider than sidis "EE"...but cool to know. thanks. :)

incidentally, some of the models you highlighted don't look the greatest for racing. they did look nice for recreation.

Forte which is very good brand in my opinion, is a copy-cat version of sidi's, so incase you can't afford sidi, forte is the way to go.

That's why there's BF.net! Also, every manufacturer has a list of dealers. There's bound to be one in your area. If you go into a dealer and KNOW you'll be one of two pairs (SIDI vs. Lake, for instance) then they will usually order both in for you to try (assuming they're not in stock). Since you're probably going to have to order Megas or Lake Wide (X) anyways, it would make sense to talk about both options and do a side by side, wouldn't it? Or is that too much sense making for you?

I think SIDI is overpriced for what they are. I've owned many pairs of SIDI and have always thought a good pair of Answers was just as good a shoe. The name is everything, though....sad but true.

My first pair of Dominator 2s from 1998 were poorly made pieces of crap.

Lake is better construction, better prices, more solutions, etc...

Oh yeah, and wider!
