I said "lighter" not weaker. Sun Rhino Lites & 1.9" tires. I ride XC & DH combined in same rides mostly. I have no desire to HikeABike. These tires I have now are like monster truck tires, look nice but not very efficient, if U know what I mean. No need for the thru axel either. I'm 42, and believe me, I screamed DH alot more than you probably. Been in the sport since '93.... Have a nice ride!

Yeah, the Rhino Lites are a good set of wheels, I've got a set on my bike.

As far as the tires, what are you thinking of using?

Thru Axel. Ever ride a bike with one. A definite improvement. Tightens up the front end considerable. It worth the weight penalty for me and most riders I know over 200 lbs. If you're in the 160 - 190 range, it would help, but probably not be as noticible.

Been in the sport since '93. Rookie! ha ha!

My poor mountain bikes don't get ridden enough. But, lonely and bored as they are until the trails dry out enough to ride on, they're still photogenic. First up is the Specialized S-Works Steel with some original stuff (XT brakes, shifters, lever, S-Works thermoplastic bar) and a lot of upgrades (King headset, XTR cranks and BB, XTR rear derailleur, XT/517 wheels, Duke Race I got new for $90).

The newest edition to the family is a converted '92 Giant ATX 760. Full butted cro-mo, but the frame's an anchor. I took the old wheels from the S-Works, rebuilt the front and tore into some old cassettes to get the beginnings of a SS drivetrain together. Combine S-Works cranks from the Specialized with some new and lightly used stuff and it's my new SS, ready to hit the trail any time the trails ready to get hit.

Here's the SS from the front. Just goes to show that you should always hang on to old parts. Eventually, you'll have enough to build up a whole bike for under $100 in new stuff. Sometimes it also helps to be in good with your LBS.

ImprezaDrvr, those are wonderful bikes. I love steel frames and the cro-mo S-Works rocks! How do you like the EM90 stem with the carbon bar? I would have thought that all that vibration absorbtion would be overkill.

Thanks, khuon. I got a hookup on the stem, and I'm considering getting rid of it and going with something a little more classic in appearance. With the shock up front, I have no idea what the bars and stem do. The bars came on the bike and haven't broken yet, so they're good. Although, if I do a new stem then it would follow to do bars at the same time, so who knows.

I'm @ 165lbs. but have no interest in the thru axle stuff. I plan to sell the HMX-1 brakes & tires to a friend of mine for about $150. I have alot of different tires on hand to mount up. I buy them at clearance price when I find them, and stock up. I have 6 Panaracer Fire Mud Pro's, and several others now in my garage.... I'll probably use a PFMP on the rear & a Dart on the front. They weigh almost 1/2 what the Kinda's do that are currently on the bike. Don't get me wrong, The current set-up is great if you are able to ride downhill every ride, but I simply don't live in that environment. I have to climb up in order to enjoy the ride back down, so I need a lighter bike... The mechanical Hayes seem to be a great brake, but I've only used them twice now. Have a nice day!

Man, by the looks of that ground in the pics, you must be kiddin' right? I noticed you live in AZ, so that explains your view of MUD.... I suppose a sprinkle of rain there seems like the next great flood, huh? I on the otherhand, I live in W. North Carolina, where we usually get about 35"+ of rain / year. Hench the tropical vegetation, and unique creatures that exist nowhere else on Earth! I'd like to see Arizona some time, but no way could I ever leave GOD's Country (WNC), and some of the best (if not THE best) MtnBiking areas in the USA....

Happy Biking (when it dries out for you)

I have no idea what to say to someone like you. Arrogant much? Please, since you know so much about where I live, tell me something I don't know.

To further illustrate my point, the trails I ride end up just over 8000 feet and are still under about 6 inches of snow.

Hey Haro, where in WNC are you?

I try to make it up your way whenever I get a chance. I'd love to move there, but alas too many responsibilities and lack of a good job up there have kept me here.

I'm truly envious. I LOVE WNC!

Impreza

Head on down south and we will hammer in Sedona! When I lived in in the East I (personally) hated the rain for what it did to the Trails and to the bikes. The Guys I road with would never dream of ridding wet or muddy trails b/c of erosion (and bike clean up)...to each his own I guess. In Phoenix I live on the side of South Mountain...This place is crazy!! National National and more National Trail! just crazy!

Very, very nice. I am a Porsche fanatic. I'm guessing by your handle that you are a MD? A Porsche is definitely in my future, but it is yet to be decided whether it will be in the form of a 1974 911 or 200? GT2, ha. That looks like a...MDX in the background? Oh yea, nice bike.

I did a short day of riding in Phoenix with a buddy of mine in January. We rode on some trails on the north side of town by one of the many fancy pants golf courses there. Fun stuff; weird to be in shorts and short sleeves in January, though. Haven't made it to Sedona yet (I know, I know) but will before long. I've got a bug to go to Fruita sometime soon, but I don't know if there's time. Thanks for the invite. May have to take you up on that sometime.

Thanks for the kind words about my toy filled garage

The P-car is fun as hell...I was doing an open track day at Firebird Raceway East Road Course on Saturday and spun it off the track and into the gravel! Nothing like turning your911 into a top!

Wipeout, you nailed it! thats my "utilitarian vehicle"...the MDX that is

As requested a pic of...most of the rest of the family (girlfriends hard rock excluded b/c of lack of wheels!)
my tried and true M2 which still does damage! (I think the only original piece of that thing is the frame!)
my scattante 650-R road bike ($850 from supergo, aluminum frame, ultegra grupo, knock-off rolf wheels!....not to shabby!) This thing got me out on a 50 mile road bike ride today with a group that seemed to think 27 mph or better was reasonable for MOST OF THE DAMN RIDE!!!

I like the M2... post more pics of it. That Scattante is a great deal! You should post a picture in the road bike forum. And yeah... gotta watch out for getting suckered into those rides billed as "moderate paced". I say this yet still end up on some of them only to get spat out the back halfway through. And when you say "MOST OF THE DAMN RIDE", what you mean is that they crank it up to near 30 in the last 15 miles right?

Good to see someone else gettin their cars on the track. I have yet to open track, I mainly try to do local auto-x when I get the chance. (To be honest it's the only thing I like more than MTB'ing, shh)

My dad and I are currently (and slowly) turning his '72 BMW 2002 into a track car.

To keep on topic: nice road bike.

PAIN brother!!! PAIN!!! I couldn't take a pull at that pace if somebody slapped Lances legs on me!

I live in Horse Shoe, which is between Mills River & Pisgah Forest. I'm literally surrounded by some of the highest rated MtnBiking trails in the entire USA. It's almost always muddy, at least in places (we get 35"+ rainfall/yr) and the soil makeup is really gritty (you Yankee's may not know what I'm talkin' 'bout). That's one reason I went disc on the brakes. I was wearing out the sidewalls on two sets of rims/year. Chains & cassette's don't have too long a life either. Anyway, alot of people come from all over the nation to ride around here, and it's good to meet "most" of them. Some aren't too friendly, but I suppose that's the way of life in the big city...

Here's a pic of my new bike after 2 rides. I love the Hayes HFX-9 DH brakes, and lighter wheelset/tires. Unfortunately, it still weighs right @ 32 lbs.

They don't look new for long...

I just look through this entire thread and didn't see my MTB. I guess I missed posting it up here. I didn't even see the same model?

Its a 2002 Specialized Hardrock UNO. I guess it was their only venture into single pivot rear suspension. Obviously it went over like a rock since they dropped the model after 1 year of production. I replaced the stem with a shorter one and put on the bar ends. Its not fancy, but sure is fun to ride.
