Ready to make the jump

Ok I'm ready to make the jump from platforms to clipless. problem is I'm having a tough time understanding what makes one pedal better than another. and the product reviews are so controversial with each other..

I was looking at some eggbeater c's but I'm not sure if I want to have to put on my MTB shoes (which I don't have yet so I'm looking at those to... I know the shoes are mostly personal preference.) on every time I want to ride my bike.

I was also looking at something like these:

:o

Good thread, I'm looking at a new bike and am deathly afraid of these darm clipless pedals. I'm always afraid I'm going to fall and not be able to get out of them. I would like to know some good clipless pedals that are easy to get out of.

Get the 540's or maybe consider the 545's if you're looking for a platform combo type.

Don't get the 324's.

get the 540's. you dont really need a platform; all they do is add weight you dont need and dont look good.

Rotate your heel to the outside.

Shimano SPD has adjustable release tension so you can dial it way down until you get over your irrational fears.

I'll be racing soon, and I guess you can say I'm hard on bikes and parts, so maybe this'll help with a decision.
I've decided to quit being a pansy and just get full clip less, and not worry about the platform combo thing, its just added weight, more things to bash against rocks and roots, and mud catchers.
I'll just jog to the mailbox and back. Or, stop being so lazy and put the shoes on....

On some of the reviews, I've noticed people saying their egg beaters have broke, and that the bearings wear out and stuff... that doesn't appeal to me... I've had 2 seats fall off in the middle of the trail so far.... (thank god for my thomson elite...) At least I can still ride with no seat... pedal... is a different story.

540's seem pretty decent from what I've read,

I'm taking a wild guess that the shoe differences would be stuff like weight, colors, material, treads, and the such. Is there any special shoes for special stuff?

ProFail 03-02-08 06:24 PM

I use EggBeaters. For some reason, there seemed to be a lot of Crank Bros. haters in that thread. there are a lot of people who use Eggbeaters and LOVE them. Beside, if your pedal does blow up, rebuild kits are like $12.

Cheeto 03-02-08 06:27 PM

What version do you have?
Most of the haters on MTBR seem to be targeting the chrome cheap ones.

Also, whats the correct pronunciation of "Shimano"
I've hear it like Shee-man-oh
Oh Shi-man-oh
GA has to many accents.
just so I don't walk into my LBS and get laughed at.

Umm, 2Ti's? :o

Cheeto 03-02-08 06:37 PM

Well thats why you haven't broken them... You got them pricey ones.

Don't you just love my English? Been in GA to long....

Jesus, you're right! Fail grammar. :D

Believe it or not, Im passing Lit with a 95+ I have the top grade LOL
Back on topic, as I need new pedals... like NOW, I really am starting to hate platforms, kept slipping off when I crossed the creek. recent rains made it deeper than normal to... 1.5-2 feet of nice cold water

ProFail 03-02-08 06:42 PM

Well, I've been having luck with my Eggbeater SL's on my road bike...

Cheeto 03-02-08 06:43 PM

Road bikes don't get beat like MTN's though.

I mean, I put three times as many miles on my road bike then on the MTB.

Cheeto 03-02-08 06:48 PM

But does that make up for the constant jars, bumps, jerks, hits, and grime of the trails?
IDK, I just want something that I can pay under 100 for and be able to ride worry free.
because I still have to get shoes along with it

rankin116 03-02-08 06:49 PM

Cheeto and Profail, sittin' in a tree......

ProFail 03-02-08 06:51 PM

I don't ride my rode bike like the Road Weenies do. I'd say I ride it closer to a 'cross bike. I encounter a lot of grime on my rides. I can't say the same about jumps and bumps, but the 2Ti and SL are similar. The 2Ti just has some Titanium parts on it, which do nothing for performance, only weight.

You're so witty Rankin. :D

Cheeto 03-02-08 06:53 PM

You wouldn't catch me Dead like that.

In a tree with Profail or what?

Cheeto 03-02-08 07:02 PM

You wouldn't catch my in a tree with you yes...
at least the way he's making it sound. Now if we were sniping the MTN bike haters...

Bang?

Congratulations on killing 95% of the world.

Cheeto 03-02-08 07:14 PM

Sweet.
Save on gas... Gas companies would go berserk.
The world would be environmentally better, and a lot healthier.

kenhill3 03-02-08 07:17 PM

Cheeto-

Instead of paying like $90 on the 540's, I would suggest getting a pair of 520's- very similar design for a lot less money, about $35-$45.

Cheeto 03-02-08 07:21 PM

I was looking at those, but is the quality downed at all?
