Another opinion: You suffered a rare, freak accident when your spleen was damaged. If you're going to try to protect yourself from all of the freak accidents/injuries that can occur while mountain biking you'll end up in a full environment suit. FWIW, my bro-in-law almost lost his kidney in a freak accident (bar end lacerated his kidney) but has been riding aggressively for the past 10+ years without torso protection and has been just fine...
Just have fun and don't sweat the long odds of having a repeat injury of the same type.

I'm not taking chances with probabilities when it comes to my transplant.
This is my fourth one (two failed pancreas, one failed kidney) and I only get maybe one more shot at this before I can't have another transplant, and they average about 15 years before they fail due to medication toxicity and the disease that caused my own to fail.
I'd rather not damage mine, being right in front over one pelvic bone, by having it mashed by a handle bar or a rock.
Glad this topic came up. thank you.

I am a roadie. Have been for over 20 years.
I just picked up the MTB recently because where I live, the roads aren't paved, and where they are, it's nothing but pot holes. Welcome to rural Michigan. I can't ride a road bike out here without having it driven to a trail somewhere, miles away. Not convenient on a daily basis, so I picked up the Trek so I could ride more frequently.
Also, that 661 core protector shirt looks ideal. It covers everything from chest to groin.
The only spors I was warned against were "full contact" onces, like playing Football or Rugby. heh

That's because most people don't know you can hit in the stomache with a rock while mountain biking. Or that you get totally beat-up sometimes. And that you fall a lot. You should tell your doctor this and then see if it's still OK....

GlassWolf, unless your riding pretty aggressively on rocky terrain I wouldn't worry to much about it.
