Why are Eggbeater cleats made of brass ??
....I know, I know...so they wear out and not the pedals...
What I want to know is why nearly every other pedal system uses steel, or some other metal harder than brass, for their cleats....
I'm running Eggbeater SL's and I like them but I just find it odd that you are forced to buy new cleat once or twice a year.........

I agree. I have one cleat that has so much slop that I know that if I'm not careful or if I don't change the cleats soon, I may injure myself.
Crank Bros does apparently sell a longer-life cleat so look for that as a replacement.

Looking at my Shimano SPDs versus pics of the eggbeater it appears my Shimanos have a lot more "meat" to wear out before they become ineffective than the eggbeater has.

Brass is effectively self lubricating - with as chunky a cleat as the time atacs and other, knock off, clones it's great in any conditions, lasts a long time and couldn't be more simple to use.

I would say 'markhr' is recommending / supporting the brass cleats in lieu of defending them ?
The 'Long Lasting' cleats have done me two years of riding / commuting and now need replacement which I have done while purchasing new shoes. I have used these cleats on 3 different bikes ( DH , XC & Commute) so I think the value + performance is very impressive.

Just playing devil's advocate a little....while ordering another set of premium cleats for my Eggbeater SLs....

I heard at one point in time that the brass cleats cut down on pedal wear. The idea being that its cheaper to buy new cleats than new pedals. I don't know if its true or not... but it would make sense. I have no problem with buying new cleats to be honest.

Maybe since the cleat connection is metal-on-metal, they chose brass to make sure the
cleat wears out long before the pedal.
cleat wears out long before the pedal.

I had one of my Candy wings that were broken. I called Crank Bros about buying a replacement kit for the wings. They told me that there is no kit and that it would require a rebuild. I was way past warranty period and wasn't even looking to warranty them, but they still did a rebuild for me for free.
So, given that they stand by their product this way, I would tend to believe them if they preferred to have a softer cleat.

They have a great warranty program. I just sent in my chrome egg beaters, because they have a lot of wear from courier work and they put new springs in for me. But I have to buy cleats every 2-3 months. I'm going to Craigslist all four of my Crank Bro pedals and go ATAC so I can have some adjustability and confidence.
