Noob Question: What's a Chainstay?

Ok Noob question here. I've read several references to chainstay's on here, usually lizard skinz, and I have no idea what that is. Can someone explain? Thanks!!

The chainstays are the part of the frame that go from the bottom bracket to the rear dropouts... Lizard skins makes a cover to protect the drive side chainstay from getting damaged by the chain flopping around...
