Formula brakes scare me. I've only had experience with the cable operated formulas but they were complete junk, not so much the performance that was an issue but they kept breaking, and occasionally locking up.

Avid is having formula make their Jucies for them and from what I heard somewhere the reason the Jucies are so late coming out is because they have had a lot of quality control problems with forumula making them.

I have no way to back that last comment up so take it as hearsay.

Check out Hayes Brakes, the HFX-9 which are cheap and durable. You can get a pair for about 200 from Supergo, the formulas are extremely light but prone to break and need servicing often, Ive heard the Maguras are nice, but I think Hayes surpasses them.

No, you're not being a pr*ck. It is sometimes difficult/frustrating to discern what some people are trying to convey. It's just because there are MTB'ers from all over the world on this message board: different ages, socioeconomic differences, different levels of education, etc...consequently, we all have slight regional differences in the form of English we use.

Also, MTB has it's own forms of slang within each discipline and sometimes what a freerider says, a XC racer might not have a clue...

Example: North American freeriders will call a nice bike "sick", whereas a Brit MTB'er would say "it's the dog" (still trying to undersand that one).

Anyhoo...

Wouldn't the Maguras be better for keeping the weight down, and also for things such as trials riding? Even though I have Hayes hydraulics on one of my bikes, I don't think hydros are essential unless you're doing downhill/extreme freeriding where stopping power and reliability is crucial to your existence.

No that's usually me jumping on people for that. You're absolutly right. It's like he took every bad example on this page and cramed them into one post! Please refer to this page https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=22263 so that your future responses will have constructive merit rather than lectures on proper usage of grammar

I'm not a brit so I could be off on this one but I have a few Brit friends and whenever they say something is a dog it means it sucks, same as it does for Americans, when something is "sick" they say it's the dog's bollocks (dog's balls).

The British are funny.

(something is) a dog = it's crap

(something is) the dog = the dog's bollocks/proverbials = it's great

(I am) on the dog = the dog and bone = telephone (cockney rhyming slang)

Those crazy guys...
