    crank bros mallet, which shoe?

I've decided to go clipless and am looking at the crank bros mallet. I'm looking for recommendations for shoes that work well with them. I'd like something that will also work well when not clipped in for the more technical stuff.

It seems that just about any SPD style shoe should work with the Mallets. Shoes with really long spike/treads might be harder to clip in. Crank Bros. claim that issues of tread clerance are avoided with the included shims. If you had problems, the worst that could happen is that you'd have to shave some of your tread around the toe clip area for better clearance. The Mallets are somewhat harder to clip into than the original eggs because of the concave shaped platform. This really isn't a huge problem because you can ride unclipped for a few seconds if necesary... It's been my experience that the Mallets grip any shoe really well. I ride around town with hiking boots or sneakers and haven't had problems with slipage. Hope this helps.

I just picked up the Eggbeat S / Answer Impact ('04 models) combo deal from Nashbar. Bout a 100 miles logged, mix of Road / MTB / Single / Fixie (I'm looking to standadize.....). Found em to be quite comfortable, no hot spot. YMMV
