Ya'll Said Buy Used Not X-mart--Is this an alright bike?

I am looking to buy a decent bike for my g-friend who has a Royce Union now and I'm afraid to take her on the local trail riding that! I've been looking around and have come across someone selling a 2005 GT Avalanche 2.0 for $350. It has Deore rear, Suntour Xcc-322 front der, rock shox Judy fork, shimano st-ef29 8 spd shifters, tektro linear pull brakes, truativ isoflow crankset, Tioga extreme front tires, and Tioga XC rear, WTB saddle. Nothing really outstanding, but nothing too sucky either right? Is this a decent price for a LIKE NEW(I checked it out and it's in mint condition--I don't think he rode it much)bike? It's still an older model, so I was thinking $350 might be kinda steep, but I don't know. It's in MINT condition as I said, so I'm not sure what to do.

The bike is OK. The price is too high. You could get a lot of good miles from the bike, but I'd like to see more like $200 for it. You really don't have to look long to find that type of bike for reasonable money.

I agree, price is high. You could find a new bike with similar components for the same price.

I believe globe9 is a woman, so by "girlfriend" she probably means just "friend".

I'd be wary of the front derailleur, but that is something that can be replaced cheaply if it breaks. If it were in pristine condition I might pay 350 for that, but it definitely is high, especially in it's range.

The GT looks like a great bike but youre getting ripped at 300, a bike shop on google had it new for 260 (they discontinued selling the bike though)

Anyway, this bike is pretty much brand new, but I did think the price was a little high. Maybe I'll make him an offer of about $200 and see if he goes for it...if not, I'll keep looking. Maybe I'll buy a new bike and give her my old Marin Hawk Hill, which is also in pristine shape. As far as getting her a used bike as a gift. It's not a gift for any special occasion or anything. I want to go biking and I'd like her to come with me, but her Royce Union, which is a FS, has been sitting in the garage for years and I can't see taking her with me on that. She'd be miserable in a matter of minutes on that thing and I'd be having a good time on my decent bike.

Thanks for the replies and advice everyone...keep it coming
