best mountain hardtail bike in my price range

hi guys Li live in Canada Scarborough welll my old bike got stolen and i really liked it so i planned on getting a new bike.By doing alot of research and stuff i figured that a normal walmart bike wouldent suit my needs. Now lets head to my needs.

MY needs

* im 5.6 feet so i need a fairly large bike
* i go into the forest alot with my friends alot and we jump off tree stumps so i need a bike that can handle that so thats why i planned on getting a hard tail bike
* i need the brakes to be good but not that good to let the other parts down
* and i want a cool looking bike
* and i will probaly ride my bike to school which normally takes 1 hour with walking and it is 3.8 miles
* it needs to be a fast bike
* also my budget is 500 dollars to 750
* NO EBAY ( maybe ebay but from a trusted idiot) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! has to be new or a little used

What i want to know

* a good lbs in scarborough
* if i should buy the bike online
* and wat else i should be looking for in a bike that i havent listed above

so yay thats alll thanks for reading this i might need quick but long answers

PS IM SO HAPPY I FOUND THIS SITE YAY ME!~

Scarborough, Ontario. It could be thought of as a suburb of Toronto.

I'm 5'7" myself. Just saying 5'6" isn't CLOSE to a large frame.

I just purchased a used 2000 Kona Ku hardtail with full Shimano XT components for $450. That's US currency by the way. I found the bike locally by searching the free classified sections of my local bike shop websites.
