First race of 2008...

Well, this past Sunday was our first race of 2008. We planned on heading out from Calgary to Kamloops Friday night/Saturday morning to do the KBR Race the Ranch. Saturday was the pre-ride and Sunday was the race. Everyone else headed up Friday night and I headed up with my wife early Saturday. I got almost to the halfway point and heard from the other crew that one of the groups was involved in a bad crash. The car was written off but everyone was okay. One bike suffered a bent fork but he wasn't racing so that wasn't too bad.

Well my wife and I left the city early and after 3 hours into the drive, we were informed the main highway was closed due to a mudslide. It was due to open in a few hours so we figured I could still get there in time to do some training runs. Well, seven hours later, the highway opened and we were able to start the remaining 3.5 hour drive. We roll into Kamloops late and I wasn't able to get any runs in (I've never ridden the trail before so I was really looking forward to taking some time to pick the lines).

Sunday we were able to get some preruns in but we weren't supposed to stop on the course I couldn't really take my time to pick many lines. So I rode two slow passes to scope everything out and my last pre-ride run, I went full out. The trail was really dusty and I kept on overtaking other riders (we were going one at a time) and once you got behind them, it was impossible to see anything. Closer to the bottom I was reeling someone in and pumped into a section I couldn't see because of the dust...well I pumped too hard, g'd out, rammed the bars into my ribs and went OTB. I was winded at first but everything else seemed okay. After a few minutes, I realized my wrist really hurt and my ribs were sore.

After a few minutes I could barely move my wrist so my day was done...my first '08 race is recorded as DNS...sweet! I was hoping it was sprained but it's likely broken. Today, I stopped by a smaller town hospital on the way home and the doctor thought I broke my scaphoid but the x-ray tech had gone home so I didn't get it confirmed. I'll take care of that tomorrow morning. The best part...as we're unpacking the truck, I unload the bike (supporting the bulk of the weight with my good hand), and turn my torso and I felt my sore rib pop. Now I can barely breathe or move.

Other than that the weekend was fun! Oh yeah, and the results still aren't posted so we don't know how everyone did.

So, hambone's down, you likely have a broken wrist, and I rebroke a bone in my right foot Sunday.

And today I furthered it by badly bruising my right hip.

Pile driving your right hip into a rock doesn't exactly help either.

I hit my leg on a stone wall today while doing urban. Now my ankle is swollen and difficult to walk on.

Can I be part of this group therapy-love session?

It took me a mere 6 weeks in a cast with an immobilized thumb. Thankfully, I was still using thumbshifters back then. Heal up soon, lads!

As are cracked or broken ribs.
