Anyone using 7 speed crank w/9 speed cassette?

I am thinking about converting my 7 speed to a 9 speed by changing only the rear cassette to 9 speed. I was wondering if anyone have done this and if there were any problems with 7 speed front derraileur or 7 speed crank; having to do with the thinner 9 speed chain. Thank you for any feedback.

I matched up a "6-speed" triple crank with 9-speed rear - no problem. It can be done, but you'll need a 9-speed shifter, obviously.
