shoes question(s) -- with pics!

I have these shoes.

They came with four of these red things that replace these screws under the toe.

What are they for?
To keep me from walking on the clips? To get batter traction when running through mud or something? They seem to be weird to walk in...

p.s. I am using them for a support road tour.

they are for 'cross races where you get of your bike and run up hills while holding your bike.

Yeah, I'm having a tough time seeing what you are talking about. Maybe you post some pics that are slightly larger so I can see the bonds between the atoms in the plastic on those shoes.

they look to me to be like removable cleats like on baseball shoes and stuff... added traction when you need it.
