Music when riding?

I personally like listening to something when im riding a track that i regularly ride. It seems to help me get into a mindset of being able to ignore leg burning, pain, or exhaustion and being able to focus more on the fun of riding. How about you?

I use regular earbuds, on my music phone (LG VX8300) What type of earphones and music player do you use?

I post this in MTB forum and not in foo forum since MTB presents unique circumstances than in general bike riding.

Could never listen to music when riding, there's just too much stuff going on with the bike during the ride that could go wrong.

I do when I'm riding solo and in the mood for it, but never when I'm racing.

Music while riding MTB has always seemed incongruous to me, besides, it's just more crap to fiddle with/carry/be concerned about.

While riding I prefer to listen to the sounds of my bike, my body, my friends, the trail under the tires, and whatever may be a natural part of the surroundings I'm riding in.

When climbing The Boring Fire Road That Never Ends, I like to sing loudly. NOFX, showtunes and TV themes mostly. I often make up my own words.

Why would anyone ever ride without an iPod?

Sorry, I just don't get that.

I have to agree with Kenhill above. One of the reasons I <recently> got my bike was to enjoy the outdoors. There is a plethora of wildlife to listen to out there. I find that much more soothing than bringing a part of home along with me.

On a long climb I like to crank "Mountain Jam" by The Allman Bros. Always seemed appropriate. Used to use an I pod now use an I phone. Much prefer riding with friends and no music though. Alone, maybe 50% of the time I use music.

Music is a big part of my life, and I spend a lot of time listening to sounds at home, so getting on the bike is quiet time away from people/sound/annoyances etc. It's my quiet time just me and my thoughts and the trail.

I definitely listen to music, it really adds to the energy of the ride and pushes me to push myself. Usually upbeat things. Electronic funy trance stuff like Sound Tribe Sector 9 is good until I get tired of it. Some upbeat reggae like Steel Pulse served well. Some Bob Marley here and there. Some Phish. I need some new music. Can't blast it, need to hear the bike/trail. Blasting it = too much of a disconnect from the world = more chance of me being careless and falling. I feel naked when I don't bike with music.

I seem to have lost my Shuffle, but as a rule I have it in the pocket of my bike shorts. Sometimes a commute gets a little SAME every day.

Only on the bike path, though. Never in traffic.

When I ride alone I use my ipod nano with some cheap walmart headphones. If Im on a new trail or on the street I only have the music in my right ear so I can hear other things around me. Gotta have something to drown out all the other voices in my head

iPod Nano. Earbud in one ear about half the time. No headphones when riding road bike on busy streets.

Couldn't have said it any better. Plus I like hearing the sounds of the forest, bike and trail.

Depends on how I feel. Sometimes I feel very unmotivated and music helps push me along. Especially on xc rides where I get bored very easily.
