LX or XT shifters

i currently own the 2008 deore LX M580 rapidfire shifters and i love the way the 2-way release works, i dont have any complaint whit these part but resently i saw the new 2008 XT m770 shifter and it looks good.
is there any real diference between these two ?? am i gonna notice the difference if i make the change?? on the shimano site says that the xt has something called instant release .how does it work?? is that instant release reason enough to make the change??
thanks

I would not make the change. XT is better than LX, but no so much that it is worth the cost to upgrade when you have perfectly good LX. I cannot speak to instant release, but I am sure it is not worth it at this point. Now, lets say you had to replace your shifters anyway (crash, etc) and you had LX. Then yes, XT might very well be worth the difference in price. But not if you have perfectly good LX.

The other side of this is the keeping up mentality that can drive you nuts (I fight it and so do many people, probably why so many are in debt). If you found a way to get the money and went to XT you would think it was great . . . it would bring you some satisfaction. For a while. Then you would be thinking how much better XTR is than XT. Then you would end up with XTR and be several hundred bucks out over time. Then it would hit you again . . . what if SRAM x.0 is better?

It is hard for me, but I really try to tell myself that what I am riding is the best thing I could have.

I've built a few bikes out of existing components since 2005...the only thing I haven't upgraded to XT is my LX shifters. They work fine. I can't see paying all the extra unnecessary cash for XT shifters. I've been considering Saint...same issue though.

My LX work fine, I see no reason to upgrade them if they are working. They got 2 way release, which is good. I will ride them till I break them or they wear out, then I will see about what to get. I think the main difference is XT got bearings instead of bushings on LX. But if it's not broken, don't fix it.

I had the LX on my bike till it stop performing well; so I then replaced them with XT and well the XT are nicer. Then I opened up my old LX shifter and decided to lube the internal part with a teflon sray lube which helped it function the way it did when I first bought the bike. So yeah the XT are smoother, I won't deny that but the LX are good if it is maintained. That's how I see it.
