    Are you ever completely happy with a bike?

    Tomorrow i am getting a chain device fitted to my freeride bike. As soon as this is done, all i need is a new back wheel (my current wheel has so many flat spots on it, it looks more like a square!) a new fork (jr. t) then i will be completely happy with my bike.

    Do you guys get to a point where you're relitively happy with your bike(s) or are you always looking for something else to change on it?

    On my 1983 531c framed commuter/tourer in the last year I have had:

    Handbuilt wheels (Hope hubs, Mavic T520 and DT spokes) with new tubes and tyres.
    Full ergo: Veloce levers, Centaur front and Veloce rear mechs,

    new canti's, which meant new braze ons.

    new panniers (Altura Orkneys)

    New lights : Lumicycle l2/20w NiMH .

    I've spent nearly 800 (well over $1000) on these items and now I'm very happy with the bike. I think it is virtually perfect for commuting and with a different cassette, touring. Only thing I plan to do now is get maintenance items (tyres, brake blocks etc) as they wear out.

    I keep telling myself (and my wife) that I am. Then I go out and purchase some lockon grips-good investment. Then some Danger Boy one finger levers for my Hayes hydros. Other than maintainence things I am finally happy with my Jekyll. But now....I've got this long travel thing burning in the back of my mind.

    If you use a bike--- You wear it out..

    I only ride XC, but My bianchi was bought for the frame, so as parts wear out, they get upgraded. First to go before I left the shop were the simple items, Bars, saddle, seat stem.
    Then went Brakes, Shimano XT V's, then the wheels XTR with 517 rims, Then the f&r mechs to XT, Crank to LX, Forks, Nearly went Rigid, But SID's fitted.

    Yea, I,m happy with the bike, but why Didn't I buy a better one in the first place. Cos I couldn't afford it.

    I don't think I'm ever completely happy with my bike. There is always something new I'd like to buy. I'm always tweekin the fit, new stem, different pedals...etc.

    Don't think I'm completely happy with my mountain bikes, I'm completely happy with my road bike though, don't think I'd change it at all. But the MTBikes need a lot of work before I will be happy.

    Overthe last 1.5 years I have bought 3 complete bikes and Im currently looking into a new frame, most possibly a bullit. If that answers your question...

    Happy?

    Happy with my bike? Yeah! My Airborne Lucky Strike is everything and more for a light weight XC machine. It fits just right and feels great. Of course, everything breaks, the only thing original from Christmas "98" is the seat and seat post (it's one of the original Airborne custom San Marcos) and it is deffinately showing the wear. Not even the original frame.

    As far as getting the itch for something different. Instead of always upgrading the same old and never getting it right. Just buy a new bike (like that Cove G-spot I got my eye on) that will do what you want it to do. No sence keeping what you aren't happy with. And, no sence not expanding you inventory to meet the needs of those new horizons.

    Yea, I'm usually happy for a bit, like I finished my Rocky Mountain Pipeline a few weeks ago, and rode it, but now I want a trials bike, so I start my search again. Thats the fun part.

    I thought I'd be happy with my new fork and wheelset, then I thought a new crankset & pedals would make my ride nicer. Then there are the new brake's, the headset a Hope one would be nice, then a new XT group, oh yeah a new saddle, seatpost, stem and bars then a new frame.

    Then with all the old parts I can rebuild my original bike I bought last year.

    Someone mentioned buying a new bike. That's when I am most Unhappy with a Bike. There it is all shiny and new, but it doesn't work. It doesn't feel comfortable so the seating position has to be tweaked. The tyres don't feel right as they are a new type you have never tried, and the pressures have to be sorted. You finally have brakes, but after the first face plant due the front wheel stopping at the first panic brake, you put a pair of manky pads in, The suspension ain't working right as the rebounds wrong, the're stiff and need a few miles on before they work, Plus sods law, and the first downhill you ding the rims and now have a "wonky wheel". Then Just as you start to get the thing sorted, parts start wearing out so the ultimate bike you bought is now due for the upgrades that you should have thought of in the first place.
    This is why Mountain bikers are multiple owners of bikes. The latest ultimate with all the latest spec, so you can look cool out on the rides, but you can't wait for winter, with all the mud, crud and gunge about, so it gives you the chance of riding the bike that really works, as it won't matter if the old one gets dirty
