so i jacked up my petal.. :)

ive been doing my fair share of wheelies lateley, and finally i started feeling my left crank wobble a little bit.. i thought its probably no big deal right??
well i was more wrong than i thought... i looked down and the screw holding the whole crank and everything like that was all loose, and the little plate that is supposed to hold in the screw fell out apperantly while i was riding before.
does anyone know what this will cost to fix? and what would cause this to happen mostly?
thanks!!
cya!

If a crank falls in the forest and no one hears, is it still toast?

Seriously, anytime a crank comes loose and falls off, it's time to get a new one and to learn how to use a torque wrench for the new one.

ya i took it to the LBS.. and remember, just cuz im on this forum, it doesnt mean i am a professional or an expert at all this..
and kenhill thanks for the ONLY WORTHFUL ADVISE out of this whole thread.. i am looking at more like that..
and i know how to use a torque wrench. but when your bike takes an allen style nut, and is missing the plate that locks the nut in.. when you tighten it back in and then you use it for 1/4 mile and it falls right off again.. time to take it to the shop buddy. thanks but no thanks.
and yes thanks againt to kenhill. you did SOMETHING at least.
bye

If you know how to use a torque wrench, then use it. Lots of companies make allen wrenches that fit sockets and are willing to sell them to you, so there is no excuse there. But that was something you should have done the first time you installed the crank. Once the bolt gets loose enough to fall out the damage is done and there ain't nothing on this green earth that can fix it. A wobbly crank is a dead crank.

Yes, I had a little fun at your expense but don't be mad at us for your mistakes. It's your bike. You broke it through neglect or inexperience. You learned something and I bet you won't make that mistake again. 'Tis but one step on the road to enlightenment.

you know what, the joke was ok, but i wasnt asking for someone to make a joke. i was asking for some help. you could have told me what you just said right there before.
well all i have to say is that this is the second time i have used these forums to make a thread, and the first one was helpful, like a lot. but this one is just junk, so i think i will go find a different forum that is willing to help, at the same time as if they want to make a joke.
bye, and i probably wont be seeing you again.

Boy, I'm glad I found this thread. I too have been doing my fair share of wheelies lately and my left crank started to wobble. I looked at it and found that the screw that holds the crank and the pedal and everything like that was all loose. Then I said "wait a minute, what the hell am I doing riding a bike that has a screw that holds on both the crank and the pedal?!? And why am I doing wheelies? So I decided to fix it but couldn't find the plate that locks the nut in and didn't really know what one of them looked like anyway. And it wouldn't have helped since the darn thing is an allen wrench and you just can't use a torque wrench on an allen wrench, even though they sell those allen wrench socket things, I just don't trust 'em. So I was going to take it to my LBS but I don't think they'd help me so I just want to buy a new bike.

I only have $100 and want to get a backup bike since I want to have something to ride when the first one breaks. And I want something with some suspension since I do wheelies.

Any recommendations on what the best two full suspension bikes I can buy for $100 are? I want something really awsome.

I ended up using a drywall screw so it's good now. The pedal doesn't turn anymore but I don't think that's a problem since you don't need a left crank petal to wheelie. In the future I'll be more careful to not jack up my petal.

I didn't think about the rust thing, those drywall screws will probably rust if they get wet. Although that isn't a big deal since I don't wheelie in the rain. Anyway, I'll look for 1&1/2 inch galvanized deck screws next time I'm at the LBS. My LBS sucks for that kind of thing though. Last week I went there to find a 10" chop saw so that I could fix a creaky seat post I've been having trouble with and they didn't cary a single one! So instead I just put the seat post in to the seat tube and bashed it flat with a sledge hammer. It doesn't creek anymore so I think it's good. Any recommendations on how I can change the height now? The seat is too high and I want to lower it. I bashed it on the top of the seat with the hammer but the hammer just bounced off and hit me in the face.

O, thats a easy one. Just get smaller wheels and lower the whole bike. I heard their having a universal sale all over the world at all LBS's for small wheels. What a coincidence.

Even easier: I just took the tire and tube off and dropped the whole bike about an inch. The metal rim wasn't getting great traction so I pounded the sidewalls of the rim flat and covered the whole outside edge in duct tape. Seems to work great. I'm gonna go hit some major wheelies and do a few big drops...

Long goodbyes make it harder on all of us. To spare everyone's feelings you should do a clean break (brake, if you will) or just admit you can't live without us.

I'm going to listen to some Nina Simone now.
