For whose benefit?

I've just spent the last couple of hours having a giggle going through some older threads and found myself being a little pee'd off with the deletion of threads and posts made by now banned members?
There's probably a whole bunch of others missing too.

Ok, RicOh was a f***tard, but some of those threads were hilarious.
Fagerlin...? Bit of a pr1ck, yes. But a knowledgeable and entertaining pr1ck nontheless.

How many others can the BF veterans name?

A lot of damn good threads are either gone or rendered virtually unreadable due to deleted posts, many of which formed the basis of an informative discussion or hilariously stupid flamewar.
Entertaining either way.

Bannings I understand, but to erase even the evidence of prior existence is a little 1984ish don't ya think?

Aw, I'm tired now.. Was gonna say more, but I'll just throw this out there and hope there's a few of you who don't have a hazard striped politically-correct stick jammed up their pipe.

DickyJ 08-04-08 06:21 AM

BTW, this isn't some plea for unbanning. It's just about the principle surrounding the deletion of posts.

scrublover 08-04-08 06:24 AM

Oh, I agree with you on the overmoderation around here.

That said: it's their site, they can do what they want with the thing.

1984? Lessee, I was in junior high at that time, and the prevailing mod mentality is period correct.

However I think it bears mentioning that the "problem" mods are not mtb forum regulars.

Ric0h and Fagerlin were one in the same.

I completely agree.

However, after the "D.M. Affair", it's better to be safe than sorry.

Oh, and it's weird not having Pete around...I miss his photography.

Go to his website. Plenty of photography and videos there.

Mike Dansy was a class act. He made for a great week of entertainment.

It seemed a lot of kids showed up after Pete's banning. The ill informed posts went through the roof as well. I think he still makes cameo appearances now and again. ;)

I think he's talking about the Orwell book "1984".

It's a Newspeak thing . . . .

;)

Isn't it a fine line that moderators have to walk. I can't imagine spending an entire evening cleaning and deleting posts, because sometimes "we" as forum members take advantage of the freedom of speech, and digress ourselves to a negative, aguementative, abrasive state. Kudos to those that do it. On the other hand I feel that, in one case, the Administrator of the forum digressed themselves to an unbecoming state also.

Overmoderation is a problem on many forums. I am a moderator on another forum and it is hard to balance the forum rules with one's own personal opinions. I always erred on the side of less moderation is better. I enjoyed Pete's posts, as well as many other former users around here. IMHO being serious all the time isn't fun, and it most certainly doens't make for a fun forum to visit.

As for deleting all the posts, there are several ways to suspend a user's account. Apparently the site admins chose the "global ignore" function rather than just to permananetly suspend the offending user's account. Whatever.......

I don't believe that. Besides, you know what an event horizon is . . . ;)

Anyone who rides wheelies with a beer in one hand, must be aware of moments of event.:thumb:

As a moderator of the Ronald Lee Ermey Forums, cadet section, We Delete old posts to keep the clutter down. Every year we do a clean sweeping.
But then again, the threads there are like these here, and these ones can be searched and people can still learn off the old threads.

I persoannly think they should compile all my threads into a big organized sticky lol..... People wouldn't have many questions to ask after they read all that and the answers lol!!!

rydaddy 08-04-08 03:50 PM

Wow, Cheeto telling others of the search function.

Cheeto 08-04-08 04:00 PM

^ ironic isn't it.

A sticky like that would be too dangerous - - IT would have its own event horizon.

Captain Crash 08-04-08 05:01 PM

I love how Dminor contradicts Cheeto in every thread he posts in.

Cheeto 08-04-08 05:36 PM

I know, him, and rydaddy.
I mostly just ignore them now.
As really it's getting kind of old now. I really thought grown men would be more mature than that... lol.
--Wating for a response.

Ohhhh, you're about to get a new one.

Cheeto 08-04-08 06:03 PM

Yea Probably. But for a post like that, I deserve it LOL!

DickyJ 08-04-08 08:07 PM

Slick work on the grammar corrected title. I only clocked after I'd posted and hoped no-one'd notice..
That kind of overbearing censorship is all jiggy afaic.
