What bike to buy? 400-600

Hi guys I'm relitivily new to mountaining biking, I'm looking to spend around 400-600 on a hardtail bike. At the moment I've looked at the Kona Hoss '08 for 450, the kona caldera '08 for 580, cannondale f5 disc 500, cannondale f4 530, GT avalanche 1.0 500.

Which one out of the above would you lot recommend and are there any other bike in this price range that I should look at? Cheers in advance for the help.

I don't -- we don't -- know enough about your interests etc., ie how you want to ride, where you want to ride. So I'm not sure I can say anything that's not general.

I think those bikes are probably all pretty good as they are made by reputable bike manufacturers. Remember the old rule: you get what you pay for. So a 560 quid bike is probably going to be better -- derailleur, shifters, wheelset etc -- than a 430 quid bike. If you can get disc brakes, you probably should. Personally, I've always liked Kona bikes and been less impressed by Cannondale, but that might be me.

Cheers for the reply, well I'm around 5'10'' and 12 stone. I'm looking to ride xc and basic downhill trails for the time being. I live close to Wales so I will be looking to visit sites from this website. www.mbwales.com

I took my 13 year old claud butler non suspension bike to Cwn Carn site and ended up bending the front forks whilst going over the handle bars!

More help would be great but if you need any more info on me let me know.
