Cleat placement?

What is the best way to start with your cleat placement? SPD cleats, so that the ball of the foot is right over the pedal axle? in front? behind? Any advantage to any of these spots?

What effects on other fit aspects (such as saddle height) does cleat placement have?

Thank you

I dont have much experiance, but I can tell you that My old shoes had the cleat on the ball of my foot and that my current shoes (shimano MTB shoes) have the cleat as far back as they can go. I like the placement of my current shoes much better because I can ride much more easly with my feet uncliped (for when I'm riding something that is over my head). I think it's more of a matter of personal pref. Play around and see what you like (thats what I did)

Edit: Also I find that I can ride much longer without my feet going numb or hurting, but I dont know if that is just the newish shoes

You definitely have to be willing to fiddle with the placement. It's a personal thing, of course, but like I said, if you experiment a bit, you WILL find that sweet spot for you.

Then tweaked to satisfaction, if needed.

The most biomechanically efficient cleat position is to have the cleat in line with the ball of the foot.

If a less efficient position is your goal, tweak away!

Yup. Duh. Figured you'd take the bait, Pete.

Bait?

You post so much idiocy it's difficult to discern what you now claim is "bait" from your usual ill-informed idiocy.

Think, then post.

Or not. It's actually more entertaining when you don't consider the silliness of what you post.

My left foot hurts when I put the cleat right under the ball. My darn body just wants me to be inefficient I guess...

On another forum someone posted this link about fit. Fact #7 talks about cleat placement. Interesting stuff.

Interesting to read this, however I've never gotten very scientific about it- start as close to the ball-over- axle position as I can get, tweak if it feels necessary, then end up wherever it's comfortable for long rides. Low-tech, whatever feels good to me.
