Beginner Mountain Bike for around 200 bucks +/- 50 bucks or less; mainly for college

Hey all,
I am looking for a basic hardtail mountain bike that will take me around campus for around 200 bucks. I was looking at the Diamondback Outlook for 189, Diamondback Sorrento for 269, Iron Horse Maverick 1.5 for 249, Specialized Hardrock XC for 300, Schwinn Ranger Target Brand bicycle for 170. How about the 80 dollar dual suspension bike from Wal-mart?

Which one of these or any others would give me the BEST bang for the buck. I am willing to spend 300 bucks for a bike but don't want to if it isn't that much better than like a 250 bike, you know. What will give me the best value bike.

I will only use it to ride on campus on sidewalks and some grass if I'm bored. Just a general commute bike. Spending lowest is best, if anyone has any recommendations for like something best value, I would buy. I can buy used but I just can't find any used ones around where I live.

Where can I get the best price for these bikes online or instore as well? I went to my local Dick's sporting goods and they were running a sale but the bikes were still expensive.

Thanks!
Jay

check your local area craigslist for something used. can find a decent older model that will work just fine as a commuter for cheap.

I will be out of town and traveling so I can't get a used one. Since it is gonna be a commuter bike, I think I should go a little cheaper, what do you guys recommend?

I just bought a Giant Boulder SE from my LBS. Rides awesome...I paid $329 for the 2008 model. The 09's are coming out but are $419 for same bike due to increase in raw materials.

You could check your local REI as well. They are having a Labor Day sale right now and may or may not have something.
